HATLEY – A Monroe County resident reportedly took matters into his own hands Monday night when he got home and found someone had broken in.

According to Monroe County Sheriff Cecil Cantrell, a residence on Parham Store Road a few miles north of Hatley was broken into, and when the homeowner arrived home, the alleged thieves ran out the back door.

Cantrell said the homeowner grabbed a gun and shot at them as they ran into the woods.

Shooting at running burglars can be problematic, however, as they may have been armed, it becomes more justifiable.

He said some stolen guns were recovered from the home.

Do they mean the owner had stolen guns in his home or that the perps stole them but had to drop them on the way out?

Some would say that shooting at burglars that are running away is not self-defense.

I work hard for what I own, and when someone comes to my home to steal from me,they need killing.

Is what they stole worth their lives? They should have thought about that before they stole.
A person stealing from me isn’t a virgin at theft. It isn’t their first time out.
How many other people have they stolen from and how many others will lose their property if I just go back in the house and call the police who will arrive 30 minutes later.

In this stopry they have the police on the scene in 3 to 4 minutes, but that was because of the shots fired. If no shots had been fired you might have seen them in 15 minutes , maybe more.

One of the funniest stories I ever heard complete with sound effects happened when I lived in Mississippi. A neighbor caught someone in his backyard which bordered the woods. In Mississippi the woods and undergrowth are thick.

As the man took off running into the woods encouraged by the neighbors use of a .357, the neighbor heard a resounding “THUNK” which was the runner meeting a tree. That was followed by some thrashing around until the .357 was utilized again. The runner got up and took off again followed shortly after by another “THUNK”. That happened three times.

The neighbor never had any more problems with prowlers.
