Posted on 08/22/2012 1:47:19 PM PDT by NautiNurse
Tropical Storm Isaac threatens to dampen the Republican National Convention Monday in Tampa, Florida. National media outlets are having a grand time anticipating a Grand Old Party washout. Tampa mayor Bob Buckhorn (D) announced Wednesday that he is absolutely prepared to call off the convention next week, with anticipated attendance of 70,000 delegates, party officials, journalists, protesters and others. Buckhorn has not indicated that he would attempt to mitigate liberal protests or a hastily planned Joe "Plugs" Biden visit to Tampa during the convention.
Time will tell. Stay tuned...

FWIW, the latest computer model run (ECMWF) shifts landfall east and puts Isaac as a Cat 4/5 storm at the mouth of the Mississippi next Wednesday, Aug. 29.
Anniversary of Katrina. Direct hit on NOLA.
I’m not making this up.
The storm is still organizing, and the center of circulation has shifted southward. Other models will run later today and may or may not verify what this run predicts.
It’s too far out to know, still a week away. There will probably be many more shifts before landfall.
All right. You are posting about this, so it is time to pay attention. :)
The 5 PM report is out. It looks like ground zero has moved from Ft. Myers further north and west around Port Charlotte. Check out the link at Weatherunderground: http://www.wunderground.com/tropical/tracking/at201209_model.html
I prefer that yellow spaghetti noodle...apologies to folks on the upper east coast, but a hurricane does not fit with my current plans.
marked for later
BTW Friday is the 20-Year anniversary of Hurricane Andrew hitting South Florida.
That's all I'll say.
Thank you, ma’am. Much appreciated.
The present track and strength estimates have Isaac putting a major hit on the Keys.
Way back in 1986 - 1987, when the world was young(or at least I thought so), I was in the USAF stationed at Key West Naval Station, Truman Annex. I was considered essential personnel (communications), and would have had to stay at my post during a hurricane. You can bet I sweated out those hurricane seasons.
Maybe Ryan should go surfing on Monday.
The expression at the Cyber Liberty household: It ain’t a Hurricane until NautiNurse posts a thread on FR...
Latest ECMWF Model link:
This is only ONE model run. There are a number of models, of which the ECMWF and GFS are deemed the most reliable recently. NWS, WeatherUnderground, TWC, etc. use composites of the various models to plot predictive graphs.
There will be multiple runs this evening.
Still a long way out, but a Tampa landfall is looking less likely.
As a Tampa Bay resident, I can guarantee this storm is at the top of the local news stories. Fortunately, we had a rehearsal early in the season with Debby. That storm certainly wasn't a dry run either.
We've got all the supplies ready. Hoping we can avoid evacuation.
70,000 delegates to Florida during hurricane season.
That track looks like it would hit Cedar Key/Panama City. We’re in Alabama just North of there.
That's good, but if it's a Cat 4/5 hurricane spinning toward landfall in one of the gulf states, the convention ain't gonna get a whole lot of coverage.
When is the big night at the convention - 8/29 or 8/30?
“Ugh! I’m heading down to Florida for the Convention on Sunday.
I’m heading down to the Keys on Sunday myself ... earlier I had heard Cat 1 at best ... those aren’t bad. Now I hear Cat 4/5 ... they evacuate the islands in those cases. Ugh.
Between TS Debby and now Isaac, looks like we may be taking the heat this season. Debby did a number on my banana plants. Looked like they had been run through a big paper shredder. Drowned my baby avocado tree too. Sigh...
Hurricane season bump
Pack your rubber boots and a poncho. Skip the umbrella. No good in the wind. Make sure you have water and a few packs of crackers handy in your hotel room. You just never know...
Welcome to Florida!
REALLY hoping there’s no need for a chocolate run ;)
Do the supplies include chocolate and recipes?
Seems like an excellent early call. If the circulation is reforming south (looks like it), it may wind up a bit farther west - east Texas should pay attention.
Here's hoping Hispaniola does the usual shred job!
From the best meteorologist there is imho. Hes a nole) In summary, this storm will break up over land. Worth the read Friends.
That is what they said about Katrina.
I know. Only god knows. Stock up. I did today. Im in Clearwater..
Hurricane Supply List: A pound of chocolate for each 10mph increase in wind speed above 45mph.
It turned north, shot the gap at Yucatan into the Gulf and went berserk.
They’ve got great speakers lined up. We want all of them on in primetime.
What we do NOT need is nonstop coverage of silly Shep and Anderson Cooper hogging the camera in 90 mph gusts, like it’s news that hurricanes produce wind.
I don’t know where Issac will go but a Republican Convention planned for the end of August in Florida? Why didn’t they pick Galveston or Mobile or something reasonable like that! snort/>/>>
I hope it doesn’t hit the sanabel and captiva islands. Selfishly we were going there in a few months to shell and fish.
When in panic, when in doubt,
run in circles, scream and shout.
Thanks NautiNurse! To think a few weeks ago I was bragging that the Connecticut Delegation hotel was right on the beach.
Not sure how Obama could get a boost from a hurricane considering the piss poor job he did on the oil spill. Besides....there will be 70,000 conservative delegates there ready to lend a hand to people in harms way.
Why won’t Florida State let Dr. Ray use any of their equipment, especially since he teaches there?
I hope he’s right.
I don’t think Tampa will ever get to host the Summer Olympics now.
When we lived on the Alabama Gulf Coast, this was the only guy I paid any real attention to...
And, well, he is a Nole too.
Makes about as much sense as the time Dallas tried for the Summer Olympics.
As a Texan, I was embarrassed.
We’re planning to go for a few days in October. Mostly to shell and eat fish.
Thanks for the PING!
Okay, I have a question. This Saturday my wife is coming back to Ft. Lauderdale from Venezuela by way of a flight from Tobago. Her normal flight path would put her almost directly into TS Isaac when it is over Cuba. So my question is can they divert the flight path a couple of hundred miles to the east over Santo Domingo to avoid the hurricane or does the flight just get delayed/cancelled?
It looks like a great place. We were going to rent a house on north captiva island. Never been there before but hear the shelling is awesome.
Flight can easily be routed around the storm. The ultimate decision to fly will be based on destination weather conditions at MIA/FLL.
