Of course there is a double standard. We all know that.

However, most Republicans realized how big a gaff in tactical and strategic political terms this is. Akin does not.

This. It was an unforced error of the very worst kind, making Republicans look like a bunch of misogynist's from the Dark Ages. They were interviewing some Democrat consultant/talking head on television yesterday on FOX and he basically said "Christmas comes early this year" in regards to Akin's comments.

People are not abandoning him because he simply misspoke, people are abandoning him because what he said was so utterly stupid and ridiculous that he just committed the equivalent of political suicide. He's way down in the polls and McCaskill hasn't even begun to run her campaign yet. He's toast, and people don't want to see that seat get wasted and Obama Claire wind up with another 6 years.
