RALEIGH, North Carolina, August 23, 2012 (LifeSiteNews.com) - GOP vice presidential contender Paul Ryan said that he has no plans to keep hounding embattled Missouri Congressman Todd Akin to drop out of the Senate race over his “legitimate rape” remarks now that the lawmaker has said he has does not plan to withdraw.
Ryan acknowledged that he had at first urged Akin to give up the race, but on his campaign plane Wednesday he told reporters that he wouldn’t pursue the question, and that he had no regrets co-sponsoring pro-life legislation with Akin to tighten federal restrictions on abortion funding.
GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney had joined the strident Democratic and media rebukes over Akin’s comments, calling them “inexcusable.” Ryan had reportedly called Akin in a private phone call Monday, one Akin later confirmed was a conversation about stepping down.
“His statements were outrageous, over the pale. I don’t know anybody who would agree with that. Rape is rape, period, end of story,” said Ryan in a television interview in Pittsburgh, according to the Washington Post.
Meanwhile, the Romney-Ryan campaign re-emphasized this week that a Romney administration would not oppose aborting unborn children conceived in rape.
Although he was still “proud of my record” of pro-life without exceptions, Ryan told reporters that “Mitt Romney is going to be president, and the president sets policy. His policy is exceptions for rape, incest and life of the mother. I’m comfortable with it because it’s a good step in the right direction.”
Akin, who is running against Democratic incumbent Sen. Claire McCaskill, said Tuesday that he planned to remain in the race, and in a new television ad apologized for stating that pregnancy rarely occurred in instances of “legitimate rape.”
“Rape is an evil act. I used the wrong words in the wrong way and for that I apologize. As the father of two daughters, I want tough justice for predators. I have a compassionate heart for the victims of sexual assault. I pray for them,” Akin says. “The fact is, rape can lead to pregnancy. The truth is, rape has many victims.”
I guess someone told Ryan that GOP candidates don't have to pay any damn attention to what he thinks.
Now the GOP must support this guy as they should have to begin with because low and behold they CAN'T force him to quit.
Now Mr. Ryan, open mouth and insert big senate majority blowing foot.
I always support life.
Abortion is not even in the top ten list of concerns for me.
I am so sad that Akin became an issue with his stupid comment, derailed the Ryan/Romney momentum and fired up the Dems.
Looks like this hit on the Tea Party and on conservatism ain’t going nowhere.
Akin’s on full throttle.
Ryan and every other Republican running for office are the ones being “hounded”.
The fascist press has seized on Akin as a wedge issue and, as long as Akin is in the race, they will beat every other Republican candidate nationwide over the head with it on a daily basis.
We’ve got plenty of other pro-life candidates to focus our support on. Let’s work to get THEM elected!
Now you just have to wonder who they’ll try to kneecap next.
I’ve seen how the moderates have behaved toward Kerry Bentivolio in Michigan. They called him a Truther, accused him in paying McCotter staffers to throw the race, and picked an establishment candidate to run a write in campaign against him (Which failed miserably)
Now the democrats are accusing him of making his students feel threatened (He was a high school teacher)
Educate is right. It is stunning to me how even here on FR, there are so many who are willing to condemn a fellow conservative for scientific error, when in fact the science suggests there may be truth in what he said. This “mob” thinking is more disturbing to me than anything Akin has done. It suggests we have many in our ranks who can easily be led about by the manipulative exploitation of ignorance. That can only be overcome by education, particularly critical thinking skills, one of which is the ability to suspend judgment until all the facts are known, including the science.

oh, by the way, I listened to hannity try and be so high and mighty in his interview with Akin and I will NEVER listen to hannity again. He is such a hypocrite. Pro-life whenever it is convenient.
People don’t realize that God still judges the nations. 2013 is the 40 year mark for Roe. Any coincidence that the economic crash happens next year? We are asking a lot of God to have to listen to and see all those abortions every day, all around the world.
It is indeed a feeding frenzy, and republicans engaged in this are absolutely some of the stupidest people I have ever had the displeasure of seeing in my life.

Akin is toxic in a way that could spread to other GOP candidates—including Romney and Ryan—if they don’t distance themselves from him.
They’ve done that, now they simply don’t want to fan the flames of media coverage by continuing to address it.
McCaskill’s team knew what they were doing when they gave Akin the resources and open-primary votes to make him the GOP candidate.
Paul Ryan is the only major Republican that I have seen who acted like an ADULT and who showed some LEADERSHIP ability.
He didn't get in front of a stupid camera and publicly play into the media's hands by crying out for Akin's resignation like some Chicken Little who seemed to be saying woe is me, it is the end of the world and all is lost if some stupid political hack in Missouri doesn't withdraw from the race immediately.
Paul Ryan did not act like some hysterical namby pamby, he manned up, and showed some leadership ability
He treated Akin like a man and an old friend who had made a stupid mistake
He called him privately and talked to him man to man.
If you want the respect required to be a leader, then you treat your friends who are on your side with the same respect even if they did something stupid
Publicly Ryan did the right thing as well, he spoke the truth and did not try to defend a statement that was both stupid and indefensible.
Leaders control what they can control and they save their powder and their energy for their real enemies not go around making fools of themselves bludgeoning one of their own who made a stupid mistake.
Paul Ryan seems up to the task of leadership and understands what is important and what is a distraction and knows how to handle the bumps in the road.
There is one thing for sure he will not dance to any tune thrown out by media, publicly throw one of his own under the bus when the media wants him to for their own amusement
When the media exhorted Mittens to do that Chicken Little, hand wringing, woe is me dance for their own amusement, Mittens like all puppets danced for his elitist masters.
The media elites and Democrat Party elite have called all the shots in this Akin fiasco and the entire Republican elite dancing to their tune, except for Paul Ryan who may be a typical Pubbie elitist puppet, but did not on this occasion dance to the media music nor even let the his puppet strings show.
Don't forget to add in to the mix of comments the moral relative progressive RINOs, the morally devoid Libertarians, and of course the leftist trolls who post here.
