RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – The owner of Cary Street Mini Mart, located at the corner of Randolph Street and West Cary Street, says he’s had enough.
He’s had two robberies in three and a half years.
The latest one occurred Sunday, around 8:30 p.m., when an unarmed man wearing a paper bag over his head demanded money from the store clerk.
“We got to put a stop to it,” Elias Haddad, store owner, said.
Haddad is taking matters into his own hands and having his two employees trained to fire a gun.
“We have that right to carry guns so, I want them to use it,” Haddad said.
“The phrase is ‘It’s better to have and not need it, than to need it and not have it’,” said instructor, James Reynolds. He runs Proactive Shooters, LLC in Richmond.
Reynolds will be training Haddad’s two employees in the classroom and also with live fire training.

This is a gun law reform that should be passed in all states.
We had a little convenience store in my home town. We called it the Ghetto-11. Everyone working in the store had a visible firearm.
After a half dozen robberies they stopped.
The local grocery store in my old ‘hood in Queens was getting robbed regular as clockwork. When they hired an armed guard, the old coot shot a local yute who was taunting him, by discharging his firearm into the parking lot, the recoil hitting the yute in the ankle.
They sold the store to a Lebanese family. The Lebanese are BIG advocates of Amendment II. When one of the local bruddas was hitting on a female cashier, her cousin at next register told him to knock it off. When the brudda told her cousin to mind his own bidniz, the cousin produced a 9mm from under the counter, the brudda exiting the store on his knees, post haste. Needless to say, they were never, ever robbed. The robbers looked for easier targets.

I worked at one in Nashville across from a huge Section 8 housing project. It was called the ‘Fast Service Market’ on Murfreesboro road. It had bullet holes in the ceiling and we could carry if we wanted to. You would not believe the crap that happened in that store, it was a warzone.
Oooh I like that name. We called ours the Stop-n-Rob
Also the “Steal & Peel” is popular.
If all banks trained and armed their employees with firearms very few bank robberies would occur. I’m waiting to hear of the first bank that actually does this.

Excellent idea...too bad they don’t have this in NYC.
Two robberies in three and a half years isn’t that many for an inner city location. Some places like liquor stores have a continual parade of incredibly stupid armed robbers, many of whom just say they have guns. Plus a lot of snatch and grab thieves.
As such, just having guns alone is not going to address the problem. Businesses also have to use psychology to convince most armed robbers to not even bother. It won’t stop them all, but it will cut down on the trauma to employees.
Many banks and most check cashing places now routinely use laminate screens for their employees. And some of the really high risk stores use a laminate “airlock” system in which only one door can be open at once, and customers must be buzzed in or out twice.
After shooting one armed robber, a frequently robbed liquor store owner made the body chalk outline on the floor permanent with paint, which seemed to be very effective.
Personally, I wonder why some stores have not installed trap doors that would drop a robber into a big steel box.
Probably liability.
