Volcanoes? In the Imperial Valley? At the south end of the Salton Sea, southwest of Mullet Island, are five small volcanic domes. They are oriented along a northeast trend, or perpendicular to the trace of the San Andreas fault system. The domes rise 100 to 150 feet above the valley floor, and collectively are known as Obsidian Butte. They are extruded into the Quaternary alluvium and are thought to be fewer than 20,000 years old.

Prayers up for all in the affected areas.

I’ve been following this for 4 hours. Over 30+ quakes >2.5 in the last 4 hours. The USGS is just generating “computer messages”. The site is reporting ALL of these quakes, including at least two of 5.4 and 5.3, have “NOT been reviewed by a seismologist”. Why not? Playing golf?

Uh oh.

An earthquake in the Salton Sea unleashes a horde of prehistoric mollusk monsters. Discovering the creatures, a Naval officer and several scientists attempt to stop the monsters, but they escape into the canal system of the California's Imperial Valley and terrorize the populace.

On February 20, 1943 just outside the Tarascan Indian village of Paricutin, Mexico a new volcano was born out of nowhere.
They called it the volcano in a corn field.
Yes folks, these volcanos can pop up like a pimple out of nowhere sometimes given the right conditions.

Thanks. You are correct. I honestly had no idea that these volcanoes were in that area.

From the article I should have read more carefully:

“The buttes are small volcanoes with an explosive past. Miles below them is a pool of magma that is 15 miles wide. About 8,000 years ago, the buttes erupted, causing magma to flow which cooled into obsidian rock.

The damage from those eruptions was limited to the surrounding area, but if a major earthquake hit along the San Andreas Fault, geologists said there could be trouble.

“It really pumps energy into a freshly enlarged magma body,” said Abbot. “That would be a worst-case scenario.”

Unstable magma may find a path to the surface, which would result in the buttes erupting, oozing lava and spewing ash.”

Muy interesante...

The buttes are 120 miles, 140 if you drive it, from Imperial Beach. Not in the same neighborhood at all. (roughly the same distance, though in a different direction, that Los Angeles would be.)

Series of quakes rock San Diego region
http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2012/aug/26/series-quakes-rock-region/
by Gary Robbins
1:01 p.m., Aug. 26, 2012
Updated 1:11 p.m.

A series of three sizable earthquakes erupted early Sunday afternoon on the San Andreas fault, south of the Salton Sea, causing shaking that was felt across the region from San Diego and Imperial counties to northern Orange County.m

The first quakehead a 5.3 that occurred four miles southeast of Westmorland at 12:30 p.m, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

That was followed one minute later by a 5.4 quake in the same area. Then there was another 5.3 at 12:32 p.m. a short distance away, the USGS said.

Since then there have been two quakes above 3.1 and two quakes above 4.0 in that area.

Three quakes of that size close in time is unusual, but it does not necessarily mean a larger event is imminent, earthquake experts.

However, the quake occurred at the very southern end of the San Andreas. Scientists are concerned that the entire stretch of the San Andreas will someday snap, causing a catastrophic quake.

The quake caused a lot of shaking in the heavily congested stands at the Del Mar race track and people did look around but there was no panic.

Tom Rockwell, seismologist at SDSU said: “Today’s event occurred in the Brawley Seismic Zone, an area where the San Andreas and Imperial faults come together. It’s a very seismically active region.:

But Rockwell said having three 5.0 earthquakes is very unusual so close in time.

“The big concern is if a moderate earthquake would lead to a larger earthquake on the San Andreas,” Rockwell said.

Just sat thru this swarm. We had a 7.2 on Easter a couple of years ago but these were frightening. I thought at least one would be at 6.5 or above but I got fooled because we had three separate quakes 5.3 then 5.4 and finally 5.3 all in under 50 seconds.

I’ve got the earthquake, real-time list going for the USGS. Almost all the quakes for the last 4 hours in Brawley just spit out the “computer message, not reviewed by a seismologist”. Wondering why? I can’t fathom a reason unless their computer has taken over. (slight attempt at humor) Any ideas?

These seem to be centered on the opposite end of the same fault that the ones a couple years back were centered on. I remember that one well, was my first earthquake since I moved to CA and it was an unforgettable experience for me.

My concern is that the northern quakes will trigger the southern region instability that produced the 7.2. So far everything looks quiet.
