Republican Party operatives, who wasted no time indicting their Missouri Senate candidate Rep. Todd Akin for his interview faux pas on abortion, may bear more responsibility than Akin himself for the mess that has been created.
Akin’s statement, suggesting low probability of conception in cases of ‘legitimate rape,” was barely coherent and was said with neither force nor conviction. He said it was a view he “understood from doctors.” And soon after, he apologized.
Akin has served six terms in Congress with a consistent, unblemished conservative record. The fact that leaders of his own party joined hands with liberals, thereby legitimizing them, and body slammed Akin microseconds after his unfortunate and easily disabused remark, shows there’s more going on.
What’s going on is these influential Republicans don’t want any kind of discussion about abortion. This campaign, in their view, is supposed to just be about the lousy economy.
But for Republicans to turn away from moral issues doesn’t neuter the campaign from them. It cedes the high moral ground to the other party. And suggesting that fixing the economy is like fixing your broken air conditioner – that it’s not fundamentally a question about human behavior, choices and values – makes Republicans amoral on this central issue.
Far from hiding from moral convictions, or lack thereof, Democrats showcase their values with pride.
Word is that the president of Planned Parenthood, Cecile Richards, has a prime speaking slot at the Democratic Convention. Democrats are proud to associate publicly with the largest abortion provider in the nation. There is no shame that a few weeks ago a young black woman bled to death, lying neglected for five hours in a Planned Parenthood clinic in Chicago, after a botched abortion.
Democrats showcase their cruel, soulless materialism with no response from Republicans. Amidst this silence, the New York Times brands Republicans the “mean-spirited and intolerant” party.
How ironic can this be when the leader of the Democratic Party, our president, not only aggressively embraces abortion, which terminates almost half the pregnancies of women of his own race, but who also stood in opposition to the Supreme Court’s 2007 ban on partial birth abortion.
Let’s recall that partial birth abortion is the murder of a fully formed baby – infanticide.
In the words of a nurse who described the procedure, as reported by Supreme Court Associate Justice Kennedy in the opinion he wrote on the partial birth ruling: “The baby’s little fingers were clasping and unclasping, and his little feet were kicking. Then the doctor stuck the scissors in the back of his head…”
The leader of the Democratic Party, the President of the United States, thinks this should be legal in our country. And Republicans don’t think we should be talking about this?
John Mueller, of the Ethics and Public Policy Center, and a former economic advisor to Congressman Jack Kemp, has written about the impact of abortion on the economy.
Mueller has estimated that, as of 2000, legal abortion reduced the US population by about 11 percent. Reduction in population translates into an equivalent percentage reduction in economic output, according to economists. This means that abortion has cut today’s 15 trillion economy by at least $1.7 trillion.
The core of our entitlements crisis lies in dropping population growth rates, resulting in an aging population. This places a growing tax burden on a smaller labor force to cover the retirement and health costs of our elderly.
Mueller attributes the current deficit in Social Security to this shrunken work force, diminished in size due the ravages of legal abortion.
Whether or not Todd Akin bows to pressure to exit his Senate race will not change the fact that the core problem in our country is moral and the poor economy reflects this.
When Republicans try to hide from morality and abortion, they hurt their party and our country.
They need to go “Ray Comfort” on these guys -

I myself wouldn’t want them to duck the abortion issue. Fidelity to the moral fights against abortion and the militant civic homosexuality agenda are the only things keeping me tied to the GOP. It’s certainly not the recent Republican trends in foreign and economic policies which I’m growing to deplore.

Abortion is not the correct choice any time at any place for any reason.
A baby is NOT at fault here, should not be the one who suffers lethal consequences for poor adult choices and deserves a chance at life.
I didn’t see anybody ducking anything. I did see that the Democrats want to revive an old playbook. I do see that the Democrats don’t really have any choice but to continue to pound social issues. It could be a fatal choice this year.
Republicans will either learn to play offense or get Charlie Browned again. If you kick Lucy instead of the football, next time she will be looking to see if she is going to be kicked rather than when to pull the ball away.
Ask the failed president if in addition to continuing to kill the economy does he still support infanticide. Make him explain and deny it.

Must be at least 30 million. If that 30 million were here, would we have the 11-20 million illegals? Abortion seems to me to be one of the primary means being used to destroy this country.

Totally agree with Star on this. Akin should take the same approach when asked about his stance. Time to go on offense.

The leaders of the Democrat party really have simple needs. They just need your money and no people on “their” beaches or roads.
WE NEED more of those idiots to vote for Romney, that is the bottom line. Romney has to do whatever it takes to pull enough of those morons along to get him over the top. So at this time, I dont care WHAT it takes to win them over, I just want it DONE. Everything else is a side issue. Its all about winning at his point, and making your side be heard later.

Todd Akin had two opportunities on Hannity to get his story straight. I kept waiting for him to explain what he meant, but he failed to adequately do it. Had he said that he was trying to differentiate between a legitimate “claim” of rape and a false claim of rape, people would have understood. He and his advisers, his wife and son, had plenty of time to think of that answer. But they were incapable of doing so. The negative impact would have been significantly less. Standing up to a-hole Piers Morgan would have had us cheering. But he was incapable of doing so. How he would have gotten around the biology problem, I do not know.
I don’t remember a drop like he has had since it was learned that Thomas Eagleton had received electro-shock therapy.
Akin’s biggest problem is Akin and his hubris.
In terms of political reality, for those thinking with their heads instead of their hearts, here is where we are:
- Todd Akin has fallen like a rock and cannot climb back
- he is still in denial and believes he can win; he cannot
- he will have very little money to spend to fight McCasKILL
- he is not the only pro-life conservative Republican in the state of Missouri who can carry on the fight
- if he withdrew, the seat can still be won
- he seems to believe he is bigger than the pro-life movement; that only he can carry the torch
- McCasKILL will surely defeat him, and what he professes to support — pro-life — will ironically be harmed because of him

I would rather Republicans go full bore on anti-abortion. It SHOULD be the number one issue. Killing babies is horrid and should be even more important than fixing the economy. Our economy will come back but killing babies will continue. Now how can the Republicans live with themselves knowing this.
So much for the part of the Hippocratic oath which says "first, do no harm". If that ain't murder, what is?
Has anybody in the media asked McCaskill why she wants babies killed? Have they asked her how many dead babies would be enough for her? Have they asked her to really show her support by going to an abortion clinic and killing some babies? It’s time to show the Democrats, and their bought lackeys in the press, for what they are.....a bunch of self-serving, baby-killing thieves.
And then what? Scott Brown is proof that the Republican Establishment cares little about the abortion issue or gay marriage. Since they shouted down Pat Buchanan, the party has repeatedly said, in effect, we don’t think they Conservatives are right about the social issues. They don’t matter. What matters is money and power.
