That may be the most rose-colored liberal characterization of this election that I’ve seen. “Personally popular incumbent” is a very carefully worded term ... because his professional popularity ain’t so pretty.
There is a “tricky” argument here, and it isn’t Romney’s. Obama must convince people that Romney being “reserved”, “wealthy”, and a “businessman”, and that Obama’s “personal popularity” are all matter more important than Obama’s professional performance. I just don’t see that argument succeeding.
The real truth is, Mitt doesn’t even need to convince voters that this “personally popular incumbent” has done a lousy job. They’re convinced, and right there for the taking. All Mitt has to do is take them.

Recall in the 2008 election cycle when Barack Obama’s staff was caught telling people (by race) who should stand behind candidate Obama and just where they should stand to create the politically correct racial demographic mix to appeal to voters.
