In CA, and yes I live here also, you are certainly allowed to shoot someone who breaks into your home. Just make sure they are inside and drop them in their tracks. Outside is not allowed unless they are actually holding a gun on you and then that is not always a certainty.
True in Fresno County but that action carries sever personal consequences. To avoid these consequences you must.
1) Be inside the house when the break-in occurs
2) Be reasonably certain1 that the intruder was armed with a deadly2 weapon at the time of the entry.
Breach these rules and you'll end up incarcerated or, if the intruder survives, loss of your premises through civil action.
1 The weapon must be in the intruder's possession when law enforcement arrives
2 A gun or a knife is a deadly weapon. A golf club or baseball bat is not. Best if the intruders finger prints are on the gun or the knife.
