FIVE Australian soldiers have been killed in two separate incidents in Afghanistan, in one of the darkest days of Australia's campaign.
In the first incident, three soldiers were killed in an attack in Oruzgan province by a man wearing an Afghan National Army uniform.
Two other soldiers were also wounded in the incident, Acting Chief of Defence Air Marshal Mark Binskin told a media conference in Canberra.
In the second incident, two Australian Special Forces soldiers were killed when their helicopter crashed in Helmund province.
Prime Minister Julia Gillard has cut short her trip to the Pacific Islands Forum and will fly back to Canberra tonight.
She said Australians would be grieving for the five dead soldiers in what was the worst day of deaths in combat since the Vietnam War.
"I believe this is the most losses in combat since the days of the Vietnam war and the battle on Long Tan," she told reporters.
"This is news so truly shocking that it's going to feel for many Australians like a physical blow.
"If we are feeling that, then it is hard to imagine what the families of these five men are feeling," she said.
"Their loss is immense, their grief will be sharp and our condolences go to each of them as they are confronted by this news."

Yes you heard right most of the occupants of these unseaworthy vessels are young men claiming to be from SriLanka and have thrown away their passports to hide the REAL origin of their journey which is suspected to be from
Afghanistan.
If they were geniune refugees they wouldn’t leave the saftey
of Indonesia and would NOT have thrown away their passports.
My belief is they have an agenda to come to Australia to infiltrate our societies and do an uprising in the future to overthrow our government and set up Sharia law here in Australia.
If you are reading this then be prepared for a civil war here in Australia in the near future.
In Sydney we have shootings almost every night even though
guns have been banned years ago, and our police force
is getting weaker every day beause our justice system is too lenient.
I am just hoping that we have an election soon to elect someone to act against this.

the way to deal with this so-called green on blue attacks is to identify the families of the attackers and go and kill them all . Every time . There must be a cost too terrible to bear , to awful to bring upon anyone else . This is the only way to defeat Islamic fanaticism. It has to be crushed without any mercy . Up the ante for the treacherous murdered ; they lose their entire families . No survivors .

Australia is the best ally the US has in the world; they (and South Korea) held on longer in Vietnam than we did (while other “allies” never showed up).
Let al-Qaeda run Afghanistan like they did before...those back shooters deserve a Stalinist-like religious state.
