National Atheist Party Cancels Convention Due To Lack Of Funding

BOSTON (CBS Connecticut) — The National Atheist Party is canceling its secular convention due to a lack of funding.

Troy Boyle, the party’s president, announced on its website won’t be holding NAPCON 2012 in Boston in October because it would bankrupt the group.

“After this year’s amazing Reason Rally, and flush with our successful recruiting and a spike in donations, we decided to hold our OWN secular event. NAPCON 2012 was supposed to be our biggest and best public event; our chance to show the U.S. that we could fund and organize a large, noteworthy and impressive ‘Secular Summit’ that would attract media buzz and even more interested members and donations. The reality is that we can’t,” Boyle said in the press release. “The donations simply aren’t there and if we went ahead with the event as planned, it would bankrupt us.”

The party – which was founded in March 2011 – states on its website that it “is a Constitutional movement dedicated to the preservation of the Founding Fathers’ vision of a secular nation.” Officials hope to develop it into a full-fledged political party.

Perhaps they will recruit at the Democrat convention.

You mean the one that wanted to give those of us endowed by our creators certain inalienable rights a Republic? We’re coming up short on the second half, for now, but with God, we got a chance to take it back and you obviously got nothing.

Atheists, others gather at Reason Rally......"A small number of counterprotesters stood at the fringes of the rally, holding signs that said, among other things, “Jesus forgives sin” and “Fear God.” Some of them engaged in heated debate with non-believers. One woman, a Reason Rally attendee, approached a group of counterprotesters with a sign on which she’d written, “So many Christians, so few lions.”......

“God will provide. Oh, wait a minute . . . .”

Heh heh heh ... I’ll bet that every night they pray there ain’t no Hell. Which is silly. Where do they think Ted Kennedy (D-HELL) went after he stumbled off this mortal coil?

Then by all means, have it!

It’s just as well for them. I wouldn’t want them to contradict their principles by carry around all those things that say “In God we trust” on them.

The Democrats are going to have a hard time of their own getting funds together, maybe the atheists could turn even a little more ambitious and co-opt the party. Then all the wealthy atheists in the country, and from around the world, would have a national platform, and put their own agenda on much wider display.

I thought I heard from atheists that they are “good people” without God, and wouldn’t “good people” be charitable?

‘Freethinkers’ Launch ‘Progressive’ National Atheist Political Party......"According to Boyle, the party stands for no government favoritism when it comes to religion.

“We are convened with the idea that the Founding Fathers had it right,” he explains. “The separation of church and state, the establishment of the U.S. as a secular nation — those two concepts are our watchwords. We don’t want government to impose a religion, and we don’t want government to impose no religion. We want government to be silent with regards to religion.”

Boyle discusses the party’s view on religion, below: [videos at link]

When it comes to the party’s platform, it follows a trend that can mainly be described as “liberal.” Currently, the group’s web site touts support for the Occupy movement, among other sentiments. RNS has more about the party’s beliefs:

>>>>The party’s platform was decided on by a vote — again via Facebook — and includes hot-button issues such as gay marriage (for it), gun control (tighten it), abortion (a woman’s decision), immigration (reform it), energy (green it) and the economy (legalize recreational drugs to create revenue and jobs).<<<

A portion of the party’s charter reads: “The National Atheist Party is a progressive, secular, political movement and response to the lack of representation for all free thinking people who are legal, law abiding citizens and residents of the United States. We demand emancipation from the corporate sponsored religious dogma that has infiltrated our government and has unjustly influenced political decisions and policy making. We are for the PEOPLE, by the PEOPLE and therefore incorporate the right to use the power of the PEOPLE to restore equality in our Democratic Republic in reasonable, rational and non-violent means…”
