INDIANAPOLIS — A homeowner says he shot and wounded a man who had broken into his family's home in a suburban Indianapolis neighborhood.

Wallace Turner tells WTHR-TV and WISH-TV that he, his wife and their 5-year-old daughter were sleeping when the intruder kicked open their home's back door about 1:45 a.m. Friday.

It is much harder to kick in doors if you have been shot in the leg.

From the headline, I thought a guy broke into a house, found a burglar there, and then shot the burglar in the leg.

The problem with shooting intruders in the leg is that they bleed all over the floor and furniture, especially when the femur gets hit. A good heart and lung shot that lets them bleed out internally is easier to clean up after.

Unless you’re the elderly woman in San Antonio, who shot the man climbing into her bathroom window, and he conveniently dropped down into her bathtub....swish, swish...all gone.

I live in a low crime area of NW Houston. Last night all the wheels were stolen off my neighbor’s SUV. Nobody heard a thing. The alarm on the SUV was on but didn’t go off.

I’m going to install a motion activated light on the front of my house and connect an alarm to it. If anyone moves in front of my house, I’ll know it. Of course I expect to be awakened often by bugs flying around.

My dad had those motion-sensitive lights around his house but never used them because the raccoons and other animals kept setting them off.

“I live in a low crime area of NW Houston.”

I didn’t know there was such a thing.
