One of them could have been the National Defense Service medal that all members of the armed services receive upon graduation from boot camp.

Technically, the NDSM is given for serving in the military during a time of national emergency, and isn’t related to boot camp. We’ve been in a declared national emergency since 9/11, so everyone has it. In the Marine Corps, we call it the “Firewatch Medal”.

The NDSM is given for active duty service during time of war.

If you graduate boot during time of war, yes, you get one. In peace time, no.
