I think you're right. Maher may be a liberal idiot, but that doesn't mean he's completely stupid in all areas. He can see which way the wind is blowing. So can a lot of other liberal hangers-on.
Expect to see ever more "defections" from the left as people hedge their bets or simply come over "...why no, I've always supported..." Because a liberal can claim to have "supported" anything, even in complete utter silence. Even when it seemed they were backing just the opposite. They can lie to themselves and anyone else and claim after the fact that they've supported anything.
Watch for the coming wave of lies and new-found "support" of people and ideas that look like they're going to win in November.

I just went on utube to see what all the fuss was about with this speech because I did not bother to watch the convention. Had no interest in it.
But all the hubbub about the speech drew me to it(like thousands of others who did not catch it live or care to) so sat through the whole utube clip and have only one question....What rino approved that routine?????For the first time in my life can I think of something a rino has done or approved as a stroke of genius.

Nah, he’s a professional scoffer (see the use of that word in the Old Testament Scriptures) — it’s similar to being a jerk, is more studied than being a jerk because professional scoffers are deliberately offensive toward Christian (and sometimes Jewish) culture, piety and morality, while jerks are just offensive at random.
