It is a very common belief among red state people that our taxes subsidize the blue states. Unfortunately, it does not appear to be true. Quite the other way around.
In the federal expenditures per taxes paid ratio CA is 8th from the bottom, getting back .78 for each dollar it sends to DC.

The data is from the mid-2000s; it’s time for an update but I’ve looked at the historical data and it’s still pretty accurate.
