Why unions matter more than ever

When I travel across the country, I often hear from business leaders, politicians and even union members who say unions don’t matter anymore.
They say there was a time and place for unions — but that has passed. They cite the fact that union membership in the U.S. stands at less than 12 percent. They cite the Wisconsin recall, the passage of right-to-work laws in Indiana and the 2012 Democratic National Convention taking place in Charlotte, N.C., a city with one of the lowest union membership rates in the country. Unions don’t count, they say.
They are wrong. Unions matter today more than ever.

I get sick to my stomach when they use the word middleclass
a. End the concept of the "closed shop". Leave the decision of whether to join the union, or not, in the hands of the employee where it belongs. Forcing workers to join something they don't want to is just not right. A democracy becomes evil without the right to opt out.
b. End the practice of corporations acting on the union's behalf and deducting dues from employee's paycheck for them. Workers should have to sit down and cut a monthly check and send their dues directly to the unions.
Treat them like a social club and see how far they get.
Unions can work if they’re exclusive to the private sector, thuggery is properly prosecuted, and politicians/state remain uninvolved.

“Middle class” covers the business owners, their managers, the professions such as doctors, lawyers, and yes, funeral home directors, the PROFESSIONAL teachers, the technicians with specialized training that makes them the experts in their fields, and the bankers and lenders that supply the capital that each of these other citizens need to maintain and grow their enterprises.
Union people are WORKING class, the people out there doing the scut work, the dirty jobs, the ones with grease under their fingernails and smudges of grime on their faces. Every person should, at some time in their lives, have to serve in this level, if only to teach them some humility and empathy for how things get done. But some never get past this point in their lives, insisting on staying at that same low level all their lives, because of lack of confidence, or unwillingness to invest in additional skill development, or just a balky personality. They are forever to remain working class, a differentiation they feel they are best suited for.
But to relabel this permanent underclass as “middle class” is to pervert the language. “Middle class” infers a willingness to move up, a characteristic sadly lacking in those relatively poorly socialized individuals that seem to gravitate to union leadership, and who pick up on various schemes to use muscle to force those who have done better in terms of success, to surrender some of that amassed wealth to them, in exchange for not using so much physical threat.
There is really only a small degree of difference between a mugger on the street, and the union steward that calls a strike against a manufacturing or service industry, demanding wages and benefits not justified by increases in productivity.
It is not coincidence that unions harbor a large contingent of former lawbreakers and social malcontents. Or that these same thugs push their way into union leadership. Even good decent people who find themselves dragged into union membership (by compulsary membership or by promises once made but no longer kept) get tarred by this association and find themselves now on the fringes of civilization.
Unions, by themselves, are not a bad thing. But some very evil men get into control of what was once meant to be a mutual support association, and pervert it into something dark and menacing.
Every time I plop down $13 bucks to cross the pot-holed Verrazano bridge or go across the crowded Lincoln tunnel in NYC I wonder how much of that extortion is greasing up their Unions via indirect allocation.
Unions only matter to the DNC and the fat cat union bosses..
Unions were ok during the 19th century but have become corrupt commie institutions fleecing the public. Time to clean them out and make them voluntary.
