3 Coal-Powered W. V. Plants to Shut Down

Three coal-fired power plants in West Virginia will soon stop generating electricity.

The last day of power generation for FirstEnergy Corp.'s plants in Albright, Rivesville and Willow Island was scheduled for Saturday.

FirstEnergy spokesman Mark Durbin said the plants would be deactivated by the end of the day.

Officials say some workers likely will remain on the job for a short period. They will deactivate the plants and take care of permits and environmental regulations. The plants employ a total 210 workers.

FirstEnergy also plans to close six coal-fired operations in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Maryland. The Ohio-based utility attributes the closures to new federal environmental regulations aimed at reducing emissions of mercury and other toxic pollution.

The ones that “can’t find are a job” .. are looking for a “job”

The moment a man starts looking for “work” ... he’ll find it, be employed and earn a living.

It ain’t punchin’ a clock and the sleep of the laborer is sweet.

Well said wisdom!

Except that the quantities noted are trivial and death is more probable in an auto accident

Anti coal is anti America.

Many coal plants are going to be shut down over the next few years. This has been an ongoing story for sometime now. Here is a map showing the plant locations.

“It is well established that coal releases mecury (sic) which is a toxix (sic) nerve agent, into the atmosphere.

I grew up in Pittsburgh in the 40s and 50s when the steel mills and coke plants were running full blast 24 hours a day, trains with coal fired steam engines were belching smoke day and night, and most homes relied on coal fired furnaces in the winter. Not one of those mills, steam engines or furnaces had any form of pollution control.

Please show me where all the nerve damage from that 'toxic mercury' is. How did I ever survive and live to be an old man?

You socialists?

Again, GFY.

These coal plants are not being closed due to free market competition, they are being closed due to anti-American communist environmental extremists in the 0bama regime. Perhaps you should change your name to StalinistMao?

“These coal plants are not being closed due to free market competition”

Uh yeah they are. The link I provided makes that abundantly clear. The only way big coal will stick around is through government subsidies i.e. MY TAX DOLLARS. No thanks. If comprehending a news article is beyond your powers I’ll look for something more on your level - sock puppets perhaps?

Bloody shirt nonsense. But whatever helps you sleep at night. As for myself I’ll enjoy my reduced energy bills. Have fun cheerleading your dying industry.

It’s not because the plants are no longer servicable, it’s because the EPA has grossly overstepped its authority.

You are correct, however...

What authority? I don’t recall giving anyone bureaucratic authority to wield power in a constitutional world. Only Congress, an Executive, and a judicial branch, and if I may say, they have all grossly overstepped their authority, not to mention said bureaucratic agency.

All the ads in the world with him with a rifle don’t change that.

...and all the more reason why the NRA should not be your gun rights organization, especially if he has a grade from them better than F.

I suggest http://www.nationalgunrights.org/ instead.

I’m in PA and I am scared to death to open my electric bills every month. My electricity has tripled in the past two years. It’s insane.

And yet, this morning i heard on radio news that no more campaign ads will be on the air here in PA...because we are NOT a battleground state...that PA is “safely” in the Obama column.

Really?!?

My electric bill was over $400 last month. And Allegheny Power is now doing what I call “psyops” sending these “how YOUR energy use rates” against my “neighbors.” of course, they claim is use more—but when talking with said neighbors (and we have !!) they use more too. Hmmmm....again...psyops.

Coal transportation is often five or six times the cost of the fob coal.

...and it is still cheaper to run the plant with coal than build another or modify for new and NOT cost effective rules.

NOTHING will be cheaper than coal on a long term basis!!!!!

Coal is inferior to natural gas

You forgot IMHO, and you would be wrong.

I don’t know how, but I went from Allegheny Power to West Penn Power, to First Energy and each had a different account number so my payments were never put where they should have gone for three months. It took me that long to finally get it settled, and after I did, even though my actual usage was down nearly half of what it was the same time last year, my bill with all the extra surharges, kate charges, (even though the bills had been paid,) and transmission fees was way over 5400...along with a threat of a shutoff if the bill was not paid in full.
I am still in shock. Their mistake, my loss. The PUC is worthless.
