I had a great-great-uncle who was training Russian Spetsnaz in the 1950s. He was a Comissar in the NKVD prior to WWII and fled to the Ukraine when the Russians were fighting in Stalingrad. He said there was a code of honor among the men, and many of them were devout Russian Orthodox.
