This crap happens a lot, and the soapboxers are usually smart enough to sneak it into classes that by their very nature are partisan, so no students complain, and the department chairman is in on the deal.
But this defeats the purpose of the exercise, as the politicals was to recruit. They can only get some work, maybe, out of the true believers; but what they want are converts who will enthusiastically recruit their fellow students.
