Punk'd: DNC Convention Visitors Scoff Up MRC Goof 'Journalists For Obama' T-Shirts
Media Research Center ^ | 09/04/12 | Unattributed

As we all know, journalists should not take sides. Reality is another thing, so the MRC created "Journalists for Obama" spoof t-shirts. The irony is many didn't seem to get the joke as evidenced by how quickly a DNC Convention zombie hoarde scoffed up the couple dozen or so given out for free by the MRC field team in Charlotte.

to, too, hear, here, there, they’re, their, then, than - all make me grit my teeth when I’m reading along and the wrong word is used. But to use the wrong word in a headline? EGAD!

I GUESS you guys haven't noticed BUT the ASS emblem has been replaced by the O! The donkey pic has yet to appear in any article of clothing or paper! Just a little side note. These SOCIALIST bastards, the black messiah and his muscle freak wife are ushering in a new communist logo and the RATS haven't even noticed....IDIOTS!! Not even Bubba and his fat wife had enough nerve to replace the DNC national emblem...THESE people ARE EVIL from the pit of HELL!! I'm convinced OBOZO is the high priest of satan! BTW, I thought the dress, which she had to wear Red to compete with Ann, was hideous. She had morning stubble under her armpits. Black as heck, she should have used some face make-up to cover up her nasty black pits. She fell for all the hype and drooling over her MAN LOOKING arms by the gay fashion community...SHE IS NASTY LOOKING!!

I think they must have meant “scarf” not “scoff”. Maybe the writer’s from Boston where the r is silent :)

Is there a new meaning to "scoff" that hasn't made it to the dictionaries yet?

I know. I couldn't even understand the headline till I read the article. Isn't it "scarf" up?

Or maybe the writer is a poor speller from New York writing "scarf" phonetically.

Speak to someone or about something in a scornfully derisive or mocking way: “department officials scoffed at the allegations”.
Eat (something) quickly and greedily: “she scoffed down several chops”.
Noun:
An expression of scornful derision.
Food.

It’s right in the eating sense from the dictionary. News to me I guess.

It's complicated; scarf is more recent than "scoff", which is more recent than "scaff"

scarf
verb (used with object), verb (used without object)
Slang
to eat, especially voraciously (often followed by down or up ): to scarf down junk food.

Origin: 1955–60, Americanism ; variant of scoff2 , with r inserted probably through r-dialect speakers' mistaking the underlying vowel as an r-less ar

"Scoff" was preceded by scaff2

scoff2 Slang .
verb (used without object), verb (used with object)
1. to eat voraciously.
noun
2. food; grub.

Origin: 1855–60; earlier scaff; origin uncertain

>>>>The last word is a bit of Pittsburghese.

sure beats Beantown’s, “Wicked pissa”. Have heard that making deliveries so many times and it passes down from generation to generation it seems.

I used to scoff at scarfs, er, scarves; they get caught on the scaff-olding.

thanks - I’d never heard of the “eat quickly & greedily” usage.

Me, too. Guess I wasted all that feeling of superiority.
