Prince Harry has been deployed to Afghanistan for four months, the Ministry of Defence says.
The prince, an Apache helicopter pilot, arrived on Thursday night at the main British base, Camp Bastion in Helmand.
The 27-year-old, who is third in line to the throne, will take part in combat missions against the Taliban.
It is his second Afghanistan deployment - he spent 10 weeks in Helmand province in 2007-08 but was pulled out after media reported his secret deployment.
Captain Wales, as he is known in the military, arrived as part of the 100-strong 662 Squadron, 3 Regiment, Army Air Corps.
Royal Navy Captain Jock Gordon, Commander of the Joint Aviation Group, said: "Captain Wales, with his previous experience as a Forward Air Controller on operations, will be a useful asset.
"He will be in a difficult and demanding job. And I ask that he be left to get on with his duties and allowed to focus on delivering support to the coalition troops on the ground."

His antics are certainly not out of character for soldiers on leave no matter how much they may outrage the feminized world.
No doubt he could have worked some deal to avoid combat but he looks like a guy who likes a good scrap and is not looking for an easy out.
Re: Godspeed, Harry. Be safe and carry on. Great Britian is a good ally.
STAY SAFE!! OIF vet
Can’t help but like the kid. He’s being useful earning his own living unlike the rest of those leeches.
Would we rather have this guy running the show?
This guy loves to drink, party, and chase tail.
Gives me some hope for England, after all.
His brother Prince William is a working Search and Rescue helicopter pilot, his father, for all his faults, was a serving naval officer, as was his Uncle, Prince Andrew (a Falklands War veteran). His grandfather the Duke of Edinburgh served on a battleship in the Mediterranean Fleet during World War II etc. And the Queen certainly earns her keep doing her constitutional duty going over legislation before signing it (she is Britain’s foremost constitutional expert and works as such with all of her Prime Ministers) as well as going to public events and flying the flag for Britain at home and abroad, long past the age that most people will have retired at I might add. I would also like to point out that the Crown Estates (property owned directly by the monarchy) contribute more money to the UK treasury than the UK treasury pays out to her in Civil List payments, which means that actually, the Monarchy more than pays for itself...
The media has made Harry the black sheep, just like they did Princess Margaret. They always have to have a royal to pick on. From what I understand, he has an excellent relationship with the men and women he serves with, and that’s all that matters. God Bless you Harry, and the rest of the Brits in uniform!! Give ‘em hell over there, and stay safe!!
Arry Prince is OK by me!
Given how quickly this young man has been deployed so soon after the Las Vegas incident, it appears Buckingham is trying to quell the chatter about Harry’s so called “loose” behavior. Get him out of town and let the issue die down. But, where in the world could he go without generating more chatter? No where, except Afghanistan, where his day to day activities could be covered with a blanket of military secrecy.
Oddly, wasn’t Harry removed from Afghanistan the first time because of concerns for his safety after his whereabouts were disclosed by the press?
My question is, will Harry really be allowed to take part in real combat missions or is he being deep-sixed and hidden in plain sight. Is putting his life at risk the penalty for generally normal behavior just because it embarrasses the palace elite?
Regardless, I have a strong suspicion this young man will distinguish himself while he is there.
My understanding is that Harry is in much less danger of being captured or killed by the Taliban (especially captured) as a helicopter pilot than he was when he was on the ground as a Forward Aircraft Controller.
Harry, got get’em, man, and don’t forget your trou!
Harry, got get’em, man, and don’t forget your trou!
“and then grow up to be good rulers”
What the hell? Ruler?? Anyone who respects a monarch, deserves whatever they get.
Prince Harry is charismatic. Something not seen in the Royal Family since the late Princess Diana.
Harry is destined to become one of the most significant World Leaders in History.
As do a hundred other 20-something European princes who spend their days gambling away the taxpayers' largesse in Monoco casinos drinking single-malt Scotch and banging Russian hookers.
Harry, in addition to his love of drink, parties and tail also loves to fly Apache warbirds over Afghanistan. I tip my hat to him. He could've chose a comfortable life of nothing more than leisure and debauchery. He chose something else.
A lot of soldiers on the ground. That's who.
Me too. Makes his dad and older brother look like a couple of nebbishes.
