It's a bit off topic, but your photo illustrates a side-effect of the debasement of coins. When (modern) coins were made from precious metals, the edges were crenelated (had ridges) to keep people from clipping, shaving, or grinding off some of the precious metal. (They could still do it, of course, but it would be obvious if the crenelations were gone.) Now that coins for ordinary circulation are made from base metals, crenelations are no longer necessary; and the smooth edge is another surface that can be stamped.
