Report: Bernard Arnault, France’s richest man, seeks Belgian passport

PARIS — A Belgian newspaper says Bernard Arnault, France’s wealthiest businessman and boss of the LVMH luxury house, has applied for Belgian citizenship.

La Libre Belgique newspaper reported Saturday that Arnault’s citizenship application was confirmed by the head of Belgium’s naturalization office.

French media drew a connection to French President Francois Hollande’s plan to raise the tax rate on France’s highest earners to 75 percent.

But tax experts said obtaining Belgian citizenship would not change Arnault’s tax situation, which is determined by residence, not citizenship.

Arnault has been critical of the tax plan and many in France’s right-wing UMP opposition party have warned it could drive entrepreneurs out of the country.

Belgium is great place to live. Beautiful countryside.

And unable to form a government for several years now. Another plus!

There was a time when I would have urged M. Arnault to come to the U.S. No more.

RE: Belgium is great place to live. Beautiful countryside.

Yes but remember this -— this is the HQ of the EU. What makes Bernard Arnault think that the taxes he is escaping France from won’t come to Belgium in the near future?

The best part of this was his honeyed sarcasm. Most people would curse the socialists and call them greedy idiots, but they would cite this in sneering at the rich. Instead the sarcastic statement, with a straight face, works best.

“Oh, this is just a business thing. I’m certainly not leaving France to avoid its taxes! I’ll just continue to pay them out of the goodness of my heart even though I don’t have to.”

It was noted that the last time France had a socialist government he bugged out as well. And no, he did not continue to pay French taxes.

Look to see all of France’s movers and shakers flee. Then try to run a nation! If it worked, the Soviet Union would be the greatest place on earth rather than a defunct memory.

“Disfunctional government.”

Disfunctional government is exactly what we want. The worst thing in the world is an efficient government.
The disfunctional ones are too busy to interfere with your life...

the Belgians were very eager for the EC and for the UN because twice their neutrality was violated by Germany.
