Its a heated contest between conservatives vs liberals in the political documentary genre, too. 2016 Obamas America grossed $26.2M by end of today (give or take some bucks) and passed 4 of Michael Moores five political documentaries to become the #2 all-time biggest.
Only Moores Fahrenheit 9/11, his highly critical examination of the first term of President George W Bush, retains the #1 position with $119.1M.
Its extremely unlikely that 2016 Obamas America will make even half that. But it now has made more money (not adjusted for inflation or higher ticket prices) than Moores Sicko (2007 $24.5M), Oscar-winner Bowling For Columbine (2002 $21.5M), and Capitalism: A Love Story (2009 $14.3M).
The right-wing doc 2016 Obamas America is produced by Gerald R. Molen who in fact credits learning some lessons from Moore. When he released Fahrenheit 9/11 in 2004 ahead of the election, it sparked intense debate. 2016 Obamas America also has passed the box office for Al Gores and Davis Guggenheims An Inconvenient Truth (2006 $24.1M) and is the #1 biggest-grossing conservative political docu ever (besting Expelled: No Intelligence Alloweds $7.7M).

“Finally, some inroads in the culture war.”
It’s “trending up.”
I didn’t realize Michael Moore made serious movies. I thought they were used for poop paper.
I would imagine sometime in late october the video will be released on DVD.
What do you think?
I was wondering what they had to do to secure use of the audio-track from Obama's book Dreams From My Father. The audiobook version was read by Obama, and it is very effective to overlay his words, spoken in his voice, over footage from the various places around the world where he has lived, worked and studied. At some point it has to be a significant moneymaker. There was a lot of expense involved in travel to make the film, but there is no expensive (or even inexpensive) talent. No expensive soundtrack, etc. No CGI.
No disrespect to the production team, who I thought did a fantastic job-but I’m hoping that the main marketing impetus takes a sharp nosedive after November 6th.
I am sure that torrent downloads of the movie are out there.
Dinesh on CSPAN over the weekend told his audience to expect the DVD "in the last 4 weeks" before Election Day. It may well make $10 million just from those. I would recommend Adelson spend $20 million alone to stick hundreds of thousands of them into Sunday supplements in swing states.
That is a great idea.....unless the liberals steal them out of the papers before delivery.
Slightly Off Topic:
Anyone know what happened to the DVD? Has its release been canceled?
I have pre-ordered it on amaz on sept 4 with a release date of Oct 16. I just checked the web page and it says: Sign up to be notified when this item becomes available. They have removed the DVD photo. I did check my order page and the order still stands.
What’s going on?!!!
I want this DVD!
I wish the Romney team would use some their ample financial resources to purchase the TV rights to this documentary.
Air it on all the major networks at the same time in mid-October. Air it again in November, the weekend before the election. It would cost a boatload of money but it would be highly effective.
See post #8
Also, Dinesh said that it will be picked up by HBO.
Thanks but that post does not answer my question.
Amaz has stopped all preorders of this DVD.
The release date was Oct 16. Which means, anyone preordering this DVD would have received it on Oct 16 and not before that date.
Why was the preordering stopped?
Hmmm. Dunno. Maybe it’s pulling so well in the theaters they’ve stopped pre-orders?
