A Few Questions to Ask...(What Does It Mean to Be a Slave)

ebating the merits of a particular government policy or proposal with authoritarian-minded political opponents is pointless – if you’re hoping to persuade, at any rate. Far better to ask them a few apparently simple questions – and force them to confront the disquieting answers about the authoritarian nature of the political and social system they support. For instance, you might ask what their view of slavery is. Is it morally wrong to own another human being? Probably, they will say it is wrong. Now ask: What does it mean to be a slave? Usually, they will tell you it means being the property of another. Now ask the killer follow-up: What does it mean to be the property of another?

Point out that it means having control over another person’s life – control of his actual person, his body. His mind, even.

To be in a position – to be entitled – to use violence to enforce compliance.

A slave is not at liberty to act as he wishes to act. He must do as he is told – and if he does not, he can expect physical punishment and that punishment will not be considered assault. The slave must accept his punishment.

There is no appeal, no recourse. He must bow low and submit – or risk the repercussions, which ultimately include death.

His only hope is escape.

The slave, most obviously, owns nothing – because he controls nothing. He may be allowed to use things. But the owner of these things – himself included – is someone else. Someone else gets to say yes – or no. When – and where. How – and how much. The slave has no real say – in that he is never in a position to say no. Not without consequences raining..

Today’s slaves are unaware of their condition and imagine themselves to be free. Its subtlety is its genius. Instead of individual plantations, there is one consolidated plantation called “our country.” But we are owned nonetheless.

It is immaterial that we are not normally chained… if the chains may be put on at the first hint of disobedience.

Hmmm... slavery...

the taking, without your consent, and by force, the fruits of your labor for the benefit of others who provide no compensation to the laborers.

Yep, our current socialist “progressive policy” fits that definition to a “T”.

The only problem that Progressives Democrats have ever had with slavery is that the slaves were privately owned.

It should be no surprise that the historical party of slavery, segregation, the KKK and Jim Crow now argues that freedom is a dangerous, outmoded idea from the past that should be replaced by government control of our individual lives.

Slavery in today’s society is readily quantifiable.

If I’m a slave, then I’m being taxed at 100%.

If I’m completely free, then I’m being taxed at 0%.

It is acceptable to me to be about 20% taxed for society to exist reasonably - with local protection - police/fire, and national defense. I’ll gladly be a 20% slave.

Add up all government taxes and fees at every level, FICA-employer/employee, real-estate, income, sales, etc, etc, etc, and I’d surmise I’m paying around 75% to government.

WIth this being 55% higher than what I consider reasonable, I am therefore a slave. Quantified: I’m a 75% slave.

Ask the former states of the Confederacy. Freed blacks could vote, former Confederates could not. They were forced to stay with a union they no longer wanted to be part of — slaves.

The mistreatment Southerners received was far worse than what slaves got.

And now...we’re all slaves, to Obama. The precedent was set by Lincoln. Thanks, Yankees.

Yeah, being a serf is way better that being a slave. Glad you corrected me on that one.

You are way too snotty about having a gentle mention that there is a better word to describe what we are. Look up what serfs are, and what slaves are, and see if you can argue that my view of us as serfs is not correct. If so, argue it.

Did you write the linked piece? It had a lot of good points, but a few parts just went off the rails. Maybe you should email it to Alex Jones.

I agree with you that serf is a more accurate term than slave.

In addition to being more accurate, using the term "serf" avoids loaded language. In 2012, if a white, middle class man tries to say that he is a "slave", all of the educated folks will implode and demand a retraction -- if you are not the direct descendant of a cotton pickin' slave, then you have "no standing" in the victim lottery.

However, "serf" is a viable term, an accurate term, and has not been set aside as a "black folk-only" term. In addition, due to the basic inadequancy of our education system, if you declare yourself a "serf" you will likely have people scratching their heads, asking "What the heck is a serf?" And then you can put an arm around their shoulder and say, "My friend, you are a serf. Let me tell you all about it ..."

It's a built-in teachable moment.
