In the “Entitlement Nation”, it becomes important to draw the line between the “deserving entitlees” and the “UNdeserving entitlees”.
Republicans and conservatives MUST be willing to publicly make such distinctions. If they do not, the left will blend the two groups of entitlees into one mass, and then use that as a political weapon by claiming that the uncaring Republicans want to cut Grandpa’s Social Security and force Grandma to eat dog food.
The GOP that picked Romney are in on it. I have to wonder if they don’t believe the crash is going to happen and there’s nothing that can stop it. And they don’t want to be in charge when it goes kaput. They hope that if the country can survive, they can bounce back and be in charge. I can’t think of any other reason the republicans sit back and allow a dictator to rule.
I think your points #1 to #5 get at the heart of the problem, and you’re right to question whether any GOP candidate could overcome them. It’s hard to believe that the country is spiraling downward, and even harder to believe that the decline is irreversible. But that may be the case.
