Paul Ryan on Chicago teachers strike: ‘We stand with Rahm Emanuel’
Yahoo! News ^ | Sept. 10, 2012 | Chris Moody

Republican vice-presidential candidate Paul Ryan spoke out against the Chicago Teachers Union strike on Monday, saying he stands behind Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel's opposition to the demonstration.

"Mayor Emanuel is right today in saying that this teacher's union strike is unnecessary and wrong," Ryan said in Portland, Ore., according to a pool report transcript. "We know that Rahm is not going to support our campaign, but on this issue and this day we stand with Mayor Rahm Emanuel."

More than 26,000 education professionals in the Chicago area did not attend work on Monday over a contract negotiation dispute with the Chicago Board of Education.

President Barack Obama's administration declined to comment on the strike. Emanuel, elected mayor in 2011, was Obama's chief of staff from 2009 to 2010.

Here are Ryan's full remarks:

If you turned on the TV this morning or sometime today, you probably saw something about the Chicago teacher's union strike. I'd like to make a couple of comments about that because it does matter. I've known Rahm Emanuel for years. He's a former colleague of mine. Rahm and I have not agreed on every issue or on a lot of issues, but Mayor Emanuel is right today in saying that this teacher's union strike is unnecessary and wrong. We know that Rahm is not going to support our campaign, but on this issue and this day we stand with Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

Kansas, you may wish to check a poster’s sign up date, home page and possting history. GeronL has been here forever. You don’t get to stay if you’re just a trouble maker. I remember years of good posts by GeronL. Take it easy and do some homework, and we’ll mostly get along without inaccurate accusations.

I live in the suburbs of Portland and have yet to see a yard sign for Obama. What is also surprising is that on my daily commute I only see 1-2 bumperstickers for Obama and usually see at least 1 if not more for Romney. Obviously it’s completely normal not to see alot of conservative stickers but weird not to see more Obama stickers-hopefully a good sign.

At first glance I understand your thoughts, however, this isn’t a game of checkers but rather a huge Chess game. Just think Ryan knows Obama well so this was a good move.

“We stand with Rahm Emmanuel” is the last thing I want to hear from someone who is supposed to be on my side.

If you're not on Rahm's side your with the teach unions; you want shorter work days, more paid holidays, a 16% pay hike and more.

I think Rahm and the teachers union are working hand in glove

Of late, I have noticed that the poster in question rarely says anything bad about Democrats and is always back biting Republicans.

Loyalty to the anti-Obama cause will earn loyalty from me.

WTF? Why is it necessary to comment on an event that makes the teachers look bad? Why not leave them twisting in the wind? Why is it necessary to “reach across the aisle” to the mayor of Chicago and ace former chief of staff? The TARP instinct is still there.

While I was shocked as you, I'm still looking for the down side.If you don't run interference your not in the game.If your not in the game the opposition really looks good.

I know a lot of union guys who won't support the GOP only because they see the Dems as the friends of the unions. They disagree with the Dems on the gay stuff, the economy, taxes, welfare, etc. but they have to vote union.

Ryan didn't need to move an inch to negate the union issue. He merely highlighted that the Dems are no longer going to give them everything they want either, since there's NO MORE MONEY.

Once you let the unions know the game is up, they can vote on other issues, like the good of the country they claim to love.
