Financial services minister Tadahiro Matsushita was found dead Monday at his residence in Tokyo. Police said they suspect the country's top financial regulator committed suicide.

Investigation sources said Matsushita's bodyguard discovered the minister hanged at his home. The police did not immediately disclose official details about the death of the 73-year-old minister. A memo, apparently a suicide note, was found in his room, the sources said.

A member of Kokumin Shinto (People's New Party), the coalition partner of the ruling Democratic Party of Japan, Matsushita served concurrently as postal privatization minister.

He assumed his current post in June when Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda reshuffled his Cabinet.

On his appointment, Matsushita vowed to deepen the investigation by the Financial Services Agency into an insider trading scandal that embroiled Nomura Holdings Inc., the country's biggest brokerage.

It Could.
It certainly doesn’t bode well, but he was an old man.
Perhaps it had to do with health matters.
Then again he must have been well to do, so you would think he had the best healthcare and no personal financial worries.

What has happened to the Japanese? In the old days, when a Japanese committed ritual suicide, there was no doubt.
