It looks to me like this poor man was beaten to death by the mob. I see no reason to think the was “helped” by holding him up for a mob photo op. They were basically playing with the body, and they are savages. Why would anyone think they were helping the ambassador?

It does not look like he was beaten to death IMO.I would say a gunshot or shrapnel /smoke did him in.
