Reports are that the Marines stayed behind in the consulate as a last stand to give time for the others to escape. Stevens suffered smoke inhalation in the safe house after escaping the consulate.

So Stevens must’ve been the only one in the safehouse.

Fox reported that there were no Marines in the compound... only Stevens and three others... one a State Department Security Officer. sparky sent 50 Marines in after the attack and they are the only Americans there now. The Air Force flew the bodies of our fellow Americans to Europe and then home.

Reports are that the Marines stayed behind in the consulate as a last stand to give time for the others to escape... Marines as heroes. This is not hard to believe. But what about the reports that since this was a consulate there were no marines? Were they just escorting an American diplomatic visitor?
