In Libya, deadly fury took U.S. envoys by surprise

Diplomats had long been on their guard in Benghazi, a city that was the cradle of Libya's Western-backed revolution but also home to Islamists who have attacked foreign envoys.

Yet a long night of mayhem in which the U.S. consulate was overrun and torched, the ambassador lost and dying alone in the smoke while rescuers ran into a deadly ambush as they sought to save survivors, seemed to overwhelm U.S. security procedures.

Accounts from Libyan and U.S. officials, and from locals who watched what began as a protest on Tuesday against a crudely made American film that insults the Prophet Mohammad spiral into violence and a military-style assault on U.S. troops, point to a series of unfortunate choices amid the confusion and fear. …

Yeah, this is believable. Exactly what I'd expect from Reuters. A bunch of BS.

I think the “unfortunate choice” was to invade Iraq, which had nothing to do with 9-11, instead of the Real sponsor, our “allies,” Saudi Arabia. That’s a dismal nation where girls are allowed to burn to death in a school fire because they don’t have veils and so can’t exit. And where women are flogged to death because They were raped. A primitive and barbaric nation that we kiss the butt of because they have oil. We need ENERGY INDEPENDENCE so we can just leave that awful area and let them kill each other. We have more natural gas than any place on earth. Let’s use it.

This whole thing smells worse than a rotten bunghole. Safe-house security breach followed by a well executed ambush? Somebody played us bigtime and our leadership doesn’t give a squeeze.

To quote the movie Top Gun - ‘I want some butts!’

“by surprise “ eh?!!

WTF? Where’s that Gomer Pyle audio...Surprise!Surprise!Sargent...

Think about it. In the midst of the Muslim ‘hood...a 911 anniversary...and the Embassy is NOT buttoned down and security tighter than a flea’s backside...at the very least ..professional negligence..and/or outright stupidity.

The State Department issues the following Advisory on August 27, 2012 and yet the Consulate and Ambassador don’t have high alert protection on 9/11/2012!! Didn’t Obama or Hillary get the Memo!

Travel Warning
U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE
Bureau of Consular Affairs
PrintEmail
Libya

August 27, 2012

The Department of State warns U.S. citizens against all but essential travel to Libya. The incidence of violent crime, especially carjacking and robbery, has become a serious problem. In addition, political violence in the form of assassinations and vehicle bombs has increased in both Benghazi and Tripoli. This Travel Warning replaces the Travel Warning dated September 22, 2011, and notes the resumption of full consular services to U.S. citizens on August 27, 2012.

Libyans cast ballots on July 7 in elections deemed to be free and fair according to election observers. Libya’s General National Congress replaced the Transitional National Council in August 2012 and will lead the country until elections are held on the basis of a new constitution. Despite this progress, violent crime continues to be a problem in Tripoli, Benghazi, and other parts of the country. In particular, armed carjacking and robbery are on the rise. In addition, political violence, including car bombings in Tripoli and assassinations of military officers and alleged former regime officials in Benghazi, has increased. Inter-militia conflict can erupt at any time or any place in the country. Seven Iranian Red Crescent officials were kidnapped July 31 in Benghazi by local militia members, and as of the date of this warning, they have not been released. There have also been several reports of militias briefly apprehending and detaining foreigners due to perceived or actual violations of Libyan law. The Embassy’s ability to intervene in such cases remains limited, as these groups are neither sanctioned nor controlled by the Libyan government.

U.S. Embassy Tripoli resumed full consular services for U.S. citizens in Libya on August 27, 2012.

U.S. citizens traveling to, or remaining in, Libya should use extreme caution and limit nonessential travel within the country, make their own contingency emergency plans, enroll their presence in Libya through the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), and provide their current contact information and next-of-kin or emergency contact information.

The Embassy’s website, includes consular information and the most recent messages for U.S. citizens in Libya. U.S. citizens in need of emergency assistance should call 091-220-5203 within Libya or 218-91-220-5203 if dialing from outside of Libya.

For information on “What the Department of State Can and Can’t Do in a Crisis,” please visit the Bureau of Consular Affairs’ Emergencies and Crisis link. Up-to-date information on security can also be obtained by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll-free in the United States and Canada or, for callers outside the United States and Canada, on a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444. These numbers are available from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time, Monday through Friday (except U.S. federal holidays).

For further information, U.S. citizens should consult the Department of State’s Country Specific Information for Libya. what began as a protest on Tuesday against a crudely made American film that insults the Prophet Mohammad

What pnut22 says is worth repeating:

Obama spends a week bragging that he killed Bin Laden.
People storm an embassy saying we are all Osama.
The media blames a movie no one has ever seen or heard of.

It was 911. No one should have been surprised..have we shut down our intelligence system or Homeland Security? Why was an embasy in a high risk area not on high alert???????something is not right abou this. And I hope you all watched O’Reiley tonight..the Dem he had on kept bragging about what a wonderful thing we had done by arming rebels and helping them overthrow their governments..O’R pointed out that the Muslim Brotherhood was in charged and the guy kept saying “we just keep using diplomacy” This mess belongs totally on the Dems and Obama and it didnt have to happen.

This was a safehouse attacked by a well executed ambush with the skill of a brigade of professional soldiers. Well planned in advance and not random whatsoever. This was string pulled from much higher up by someone.

Poor man...

They’re not interested in killing each other. Running away from them won’t stop them. The cause of their hatred is not our interest in oil; it goes back much further, and it’s in here as well as rooted in WWI and WWII.

Running away will not work. It will make us look weaker. They are not interested in killing each other.
