Manuel Barroso, president of the European Commission (EC), said that any new nation state will have to apply for membership under international law. This would mean a separate Scotland having to sign up to the euro and the Schengen Agreement, which permits free movement without passport checks, unless it can secure its own version of the UKs opt-outs.

Naturally this applies to a separate England, right?
England and Wales and Northern Ireland could still be the UK.
Maybe he wants Scottish oil revenues to help bail out the PIGS?
Then the U on the UK would be meaningless............
Wonder if gay Scotland wants the Euro? or Sterling?
Isn’t Scotland dependent on English taxpayers? Why would they separate?
It's in their nature...
Probably for the same reason Quebec keeps threatening to separate, to win concessions.

Good to know.

Hey Gator...
How about a Texas Independence Party?
OK...so what happens to my 2-pound note from the Bank of Scotland? Or all the other Bank of Scotland issued currency.
Nothing makes a poor Yanks pants soiled when getting change in Scotland for a 20-pound note...and they are giving you bills without the Queen’s picture on it.
Scotland makes up 8.4% of the population of the UK, we generate 9.4% of the GDP, and we receive 9.3% of taxes.
Scotland has been subsidising the rest of the UK for years.

Very interesting figures, indeed. And, I must admit, surprising to me. I may have to re-think my assumptions, though I'm not sure your statistics would justify your last statement.
