I really think your on to something with Gulf of Tonkin, but I think with a USS LIBERTY combo.
I was a submarine officer who recently got out two years ago. I can assure you that the pier watch, quarterdeck watch, below deck watch, etc were definately loaded.
Brett reads what’s handed to him! And speaking of Brett, I nearly puked listening to the skank from AP that he had on there this evening, lying her soul to a cinder regarding the the faux controversy the media hyped up over Romney’s statement......which, by the way, was far and away more PRESIDENTIAL than Zero’s was!
Breitbart
“the consulate where Ambassador Chris Stevens was killed was an interim facility with zero Marines. None. Instead, it was staffed by Libyan security officers, who according to CBS News, told Ambassador Stevens to hide in a second building, then promptly directed the Islamist mob to him. He was murdered and dragged through the streets.”

Well, I was never on a sub. However In can tell you as an NCO in the sixties, not only did we not carry live ammunition, I to this day have never fired a 45. I could field strip one, but never fired one. I stood quarterdeck watch as well as shore patrol for three years...

I totally believe you. It is just interesting the change in posture over the times. Even in the 90’s I heard stories similiar to yours. One sad story is that near the end of my tour on my boat one of the quarterdeck watches committed suicide right there on the pier.
