NORTH SIOUX CITY, S.D. – Beef Products Inc. sued ABC News, Inc. for defamation Thursday over its coverage of a meat product that critics dub "pink slime," claiming the network damaged the company by misleading consumers into believing it is unhealthy and unsafe.
The Dakota Dunes, S.D.-based meat processor is seeking $1.2 billion in damages for roughly 200 "false and misleading and defamatory" statements about the product officially known as lean, finely textured beef, said Dan Webb, BPI's Chicago-based attorney.
The lawsuit filed in a South Dakota state court also names several individuals as defendants, including ABC news anchor Diane Sawyer and the Department of Agriculture microbiologist who coined the term "pink slime."

This is the third article I’ve seen excerpted on this lawsuit and I have yet to read just what assertions of ABC the plaintiff is claiming were false and defamatory.

ABC would never touch what is in a hot dog.
The Joke is do you know why the USDA will not allow vegetables to be in a hot dog?

What nonsense and ignorance. “Pink Slime” is very lean been which is processed in a very clean environment because the lack of fat can generate more bacteria.
It is cleaner and leaner than what you are eating.

I would have figured that getting in the ring and losing against Oprah back in the 90s would have made the beef industry swear off of filing suits. Now we have to put up with Dr. Phil since his career was launched then with Oprah using his counseling services during the trial.

If ABCNews made untrue claims about it's nutritional value, it's liable.
If ABC News simply pointed out that it's gross, it committed no crime. It is gross - but when you buy chicken McNuggets, you're buying gross on purpose.

Look, I thought as you do until the “Pink Slime” scare came to FR. A butcher weighed in and said that this has been done FOREVER in the meat industry. There is still good meat left on a carcass after the steaks, chops and loins are removed. Pieces that are way too small to sell outright. Even too small or thin to become good looking burger.
Guess what it becomes?
