Good comments. I offer these thoughts in as objective a way as I can.
My girlfriend actually called it about a year ago when she observed about Obama: “He doesn’t want to be President anymore.” When I responded that he intended to run for reelection, she said: “He sees himself as a historical figure, a Martin Luther King. He needs a reelection to cement his legacy.”
She’s right, look at how Obama spends his time, campaigning while world leaders are snubbed and his “leadership” statements are all laundered through campaign spokesmen.
Yesterday I was truly surprised when Hillary made a statement about our American government’s position on films and videos and private citizen speech. She is only responsible for foreign affairs not domestic policy.
If that message is to be made by our government it must be made by our President. Obama is either too weak to represent us as a nation or he just doesn’t care.
Your girlfriend’s intuition was absolutely right. Obama’s narrative as a historical figure began with his books, historic election and consolidated by the Nobel Peace price, even before he actually accomplished anything. The rest is just filling in the details. The real world events and our flagging economy merely served as distractions from him accomplishing his greatness.
