It’s time for Frederic Chopin: The Final Years. By 1844, when Fred was 34, his long relationship with the female French novelist George Sand was on the rocks. The tempestuous relationship, with its smokin’ hot sex, became something more like a friendship, with George taking on the role of a nurse for poor Fred. Fred’s tuberculosis was slowly killing him.

The project that occupied all of 1844 was his last piano sonata, one of the monuments of the repertory.

The first subject is one of Chopin’s most forceful and noble themes. The second subject at 1:29 in D Major is beautiful and expressive, occasionally threatening to turn dark. At 4:00 be begins his development and takes his first subject apart, until at 4:53 he works on developing his second subject, but then seamlessly recapitulates with a truncated first subject. At 6:08 be brings back his second subject in B Major, The coda at 8:23 wraps it up in the major key.

Chopin: Piano Sonata in B minor, Op. 58 (first movement)

The second movement is a short, light-footed scherzo with a contemplative middle section.

(second movement)

The slow movement is a song without words, but quite different from Mendelssohn’s approach. The middle subject at 2:30 is heartbreaking and points the way to Brahms.

(third movement)

The finale is one of great roller coaster rides of the repertory. Adam Neiman summed it up perfectly when he described it as, “The Cossacks are coming!” Even if you don’t like classical music, crank up the volume and listen to this. It’s classical rock and roll.

(fourth movement)
