White House Lists 'Doomsday' Budget Cuts

The Obama administration today laid out on paper - 400 pages of it - the details of $1.2 trillion in automatic spending cuts that would take effect at the end of the year unless Congress strikes a deal. The picture is not pretty.

Billions of dollars would be slashed from defense operations and maintenance programs, says the administration. Medicare would take a two-percent hit, trimming millions in payouts to health care providers. Scientific research programs would be gutted. Aid for the poor and needy would be sharply curtailed.

More than a billion dollars would even be wiped from the State Department's diplomatic and consular program, including $127 million for embassy security, construction and maintenance and $2 million for the protection of foreign missions and officials, according to the document.

"The report leaves no question that the sequestration would be deeply destructive to national security, domestic investments and core government functions," the administration writes in the report, which was submitted to Congress as required by law.

"Sequestration" is the technical name for the across-the-board spending cuts that were agreed to by bipartisan majorities in both chambers of Congress last year as a penalty for failing to achieve a deficit reduction plan. They take effect on Jan. 2, 2013, unless lawmakers come up with a different plan totaling $1.2 trillion.

obama wants the cuts. He can use it as a campaign issue plus it hurts the country’s security.

You reduce your ability to fight two major wars at a time to one, and then you find yourself in two major wars.

So, you're saying the military is super-efficient and just can't do it with less money? Every dollar spent is spent wisely and to maximum effect?

Wait a minute... We're talking US military here, right?

The Navy will have a fleet the same size as in 1915, but with aluminum ships like the floating turkey LCS.

Blame Harry Reid..”over and over and over.

Boehner isn’t smart enough to do that.
He is MIA.
He can’t find a microphone or a vid cam to get in front of.
OTOH, Obama and Reid will find some and camp out with them to repeat how it’s Boehner’s and congress’ fault.

I’ve seen military organasations from the inside for a couple of decades, and I’ve dealt with large corporations for about that amount of time as well.

The military is no more or less efficient than any other large organization. Of course there is waste and it is mostly the waste that is forced on it just like the waste that is forced on private companies.

The military spends an ungodly amount of money on things like environmental compliance, and if they don’t comply, they spend it on fines to the EPA and state regulators.

That is only one example. Another is the waste in the contracting process that if forced on it by the law; small contractors, minority contractor, disabled contractor preferences and the lawsuits that come from them if everything is not performed to a 20,000 page manual.

In effect the regulations cause most of the inefficiency and unless those are changed and you cut $1T from the defense budget, you just might find yourself wondering where the military is when you need them. They are talking of mothballing a couple of carrier battle groups already.

If you want to live with a reduced capability, OK. I can live with it too. Just know what it means.

Well, the Pentagon doesn’t need bullets; the Social Security Administration needs bullets. I thought everyone was clear on that.

Scientific research programs would be gutted.

Bet the Voyager probe would be turned off just as it’s getting close to interstellar space. And they would turn off the Opportunity and Curiosity Mars rovers. Hell, they would probably shut down NASA completely. Anyway, we don’t need no stinkin scientificy research. Thats for nerds and dorks. And it’s all run by commie mooslums. Let the rest of the world dominate that kind of stuff.
