The thoughts articulated by Jefferson and others in the Virginia Act for the Establishment of Religious Freedom seem to be a significant factor in that which became the 1st amendment — with its prohibition against government establishments of religions (like sharia law) and the protection of the individual’s right to criticize and debate the same.

Apparently the American Founders believed in self-evident Truth manifested in minds Created FREE by the Almighty.
