Stupid advice. First, who is going bother to call the Secret Service? Local police? They'll yawn. Just take it to a bank and they'll handle all of that for you.

The second part of your statement contradicts the first part of your statement, as the bank is going to do exactly the thing you said is stupid. They will most likely inform the authorities of who turned in the currency, and than you will be receiving a visit from the Secret Service in regards to the bill. Either way you do it, yourself or by the bank, you will eventually end up being in contact with the authorities.

Secondly, these guidelines are mainly directed to businesses, such as Walmart, on what to do when receiving counterfeit currency.

No, the “advice” was to individuals whom, as I pointed out, won’t bother. In my business we always just gave it to the bank, or the bank caught them even when we didn’t. Sometimes the ink pen you use is inconclusive.

And, you can’t get fake money back from anyone. The bank won’t give it back, the government won’t. So if you take it, your out unless you pass it off somehow unknowingly. A lot of the new things they do to the currency really help.

After 35 years of hotels, sometimes it’s difficult to check out all cash transactions. Which, btw, always amazes me that even to this day some just like to pay cash. Of course, if you have some guy staying a long period in a room paying cash, security keeps an eye...usually drug dealers or running prostitutes. lol
