British PM fires 'Chief Mouser' Larry the cat

British Prime Minister David Cameron has made a major cabinet move: he fired his pet cat.

Larry, Chief Mouser to the Cabinet Office, has been cat-napping on the job, reports the Daily Mail.

Recruited from an animal shelter specifically for his mousing skills, Larry assumed office in Feb. 2011 and was charged with ridding 10 Downing Street of the pests.

"Larry spends his days greeting guests to the house, inspecting security defences and testing antique furniture for napping quality. His day to day responsibilities also include contemplating a solution to the mouse occupancy of the house," says the website of the PM's official residence.

But his record at mouse catching has been abysmal. He made his first confirmed kill just last month, according to the Daily Mail report.

Olly Grender, from the communications office of 10 Downing, tweeted on Aug. 28: "Just arrived at work Larry the cat sitting proudly outside No10 front door with a dead mouse next to him," and later posted a photo of "the victim."

Cameron is reportedly fed up with the failing feline and has recruited instead Freya, the tabby belonging to Chancellor George Osborne.

We leave blocks of industrial grade rat poison in my hunting camp. As we are away months at a time, If we don’t it gets infested. Now we occasionally have to pick up a. Corpse or 2, but that is about it

Yes.
No.

People just like to use cats as a cheap and lovely substitute for the extermination man. My mum and dad bought two cats twenty years ago to take out mice when they lived in a farmhouse. They moved a few years later back to town living and the cats became much loved town pets. Now sadly dead.

If you want a good mouser, Prime Minister, get a female.

When a cat brings you a dead mouse, it’s not a trophy, it’s a warning. “This could be you! Now hurry up and change my cat box!”

Never been a cat person.
I do have a stray that I took in as a 1.5lb kitten 3 years ago. She takes great pleasure starting trouble with my 2 year old Brittany. She gets the better of him every time. If I still had my big shepherd(Alsatian) who died many years ago. This cat would have been shaken like a rag to meet its maker long ago.
My other Brittany (bitch) has a cordial relationship with the cat

I can’t say I’m a cat person. I like this one though. I call her Mauser, an appropriate name for a gun collectors cat.

Sounds like Allie, the big gray tabby that lived in my mother's nursing home. She had a scratching post but preferred the furniture.

I learned a country lesson today about leaving out buckets of water when using DeCon mouse poison.

The critters get dried out and head to the bucket for drink, fall in and drown.

Female cats in particular most certainly do bring “gifts”. They’re very kindly trying to help feed the soft skinned giant kittens who can’t mouse for themselves!

“Alsatian”

My husband and I were looking at a house to rent. The Realtor wouldn’t rent to anyone who owned a German Shepherd (perceived dangerous dog). I told her we had an Alsatian. She had no clue. My husband had a great laugh over that interaction.

the only reason I used the term was I do believe the guy I was writing too....Was in England or Scotland where they tend to call that dog by the original name.

When I was a kid in the Bronx in the 1950s...we called them “Police Dogs”

I never was until mum and dad got the two cats (who had a litter, they kept the adorable runt of the litter, who lived for 20 years).

I am still like you more a dog person, but I am much more fond of cats now.
