The dark side of Gov. Jerry Brown's tax plan
Sacramento Bee ^ | 9/16/12 | Dan Walters

Jerry Brown fancies himself a futurist, exhorting us to act now to ensure a better tomorrow – with a bullet train and a more dependable water system his prime examples.

Their merits notwithstanding, making decisions with long-term benefits is precisely what politicians should – but rarely – do.

One wonders, however, how Brown squares his self-appointed role as progressive pathfinder with his regressive and potentially disastrous approach to the state's chronic gap between revenue and spending.

While making some reductions in spending – although how permanent is questionable – the first two budgets that Brown signed during his second stint in the governorship were based on shaky revenue assumptions.

The first, in 2011, assumed that $4 billion in previously unseen revenue would magically appear. It didn't.

The second, this year, assumes that about $6 billion will come from voter approval of sales and income tax hikes in November, no better than a 50-50 bet.

Even were Brown's tax measure, Proposition 30, to win voter approval, its long-term effect would be to make the state's fiscal situation even less predictable, and continued budgetary angst even more likely.

“revenue would magically appear” - I believe that’s one of the planks in the Democrat Party Platform. It comes right after “Choom makes you smort.”

Brown’s hocus pocus also depends on 1.9 billion in tax revenue from facebook.

Just once, I’d like Ol’ Jer to square himself with the (taxpaying) families and small businesses he’s chased out of California with his “futuristic” plans.

All that will be left will be the social and fiscal parasites.

Everybody else who has been picked clean via county and state taxes will have already gone Galt, in an attempt to keep some of what they’ve earned.

The (Moonbeam) plan's core is a boost in income taxes on a relative handful of high-income Californians who already pay most of the state's income taxes and whose taxable incomes are tied largely to stocks and other capital markets.

If nobody has informed Mister Moonbeam, then alas it falls to me.

I know a few of said "high-income" peeps, and they plan on leaving the state faster than you can say..."boarded-up-business".

Even Jerry isn’t to pleased with a Pres. that plays golf, parties, and travels to Hawaii.

Californians face a "day of reckoning" this November, when they will have to make the hard choice about how much government they are willing to pay for, the governor said Saturday in an interview with The Chronicle.

"And if we don't want to pay, then we have to deprive ourselves of that which we would like, and it's very hard to get people to make that choice."

Lying Democrat scumbags love to throw out that false dichotomy about people wanting government to provide free stuff but not wanting their taxes raised pay for it. ...As if the people voting for the "free stuff" are the same people who get up and go to work and get half their paychecks ripped off to pay for the "free stuff".

I hate lying scumbags like Jerry Brown.

Jerry Brown just wanting to tax the rich is B.S. I just got a bill from the board of equalization for $150.00 that has been assessed on all “rural” property owners. This is on all incomes. If your house is in the “state responsibility area” you have to pay this fee for “Fire Safe Counsels”. Now some might argue that you should pay more for fire protection if you live in a rural setting. This does not go to fire protection it goes to a new program to educate people how to make their properties more defensible but none for actual fire protection. As for the rural part I live right in the middle of a town of about 1300 people. We have a volunteer fire department but that doesn’t count. To top it off the bills they sent out are for last year. Retroactive. We will get another bill for this year.

There is nothing more dangerous than a politician in need of money. Heroine addicts have nothing on Jerry Brown. California will turn the homeless upside down to see if they can shake a few coins out of their pockets before they get this budget mess figured out.
