It was Winston Churchill who put it best as he described Charles de Gaulle’s almost permanent look of sublime incredulity as that of a female llama surprised in her bath.

Another world leader did his best impersonation of a most surprised llama last Tuesday and it would have been funny if it wasn’t so tragic.

U.S. President Barack Obama’s administration’s first response to protesters in Cairo attacking the U.S. Embassy over an Internet clip posted by an obvious nut job was to endorse the anger of the mob — and then say sorry.

Their first press statement on the matter began: “The Embassy of the United States in Cairo condemns the continuing efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims.” There was no robust condemnation of the attacks and no implicit statement by the United States that it will stand and defend its property, its people and its interests in a foreign land.

Just a bemused attempt to ameliorate hurt feelings and stony silence from Obama.

Even after the protesters had climbed the walls and entered the U.S. Embassy in Cairo the official State Department tone was one of apology.

“This morning’s condemnation (issued before the protest began) still stands” began the next statement even as protesters trashed the embassy.

It took a full day for President Obama, out on the campaign stump in Las Vegas, to summon sufficient anger to express his displeasure at the attacks on U.S. interests and the subsequent death of U.S. Ambassador to Libya Christopher Stevens, two former Navy SEALS and a State Department employee in the Benghazi consulate attack.

He added he personally was having “a tough day” just in case anyone was wondering.

By then the State Department had quietly disowned the Cairo Embassy statements apologizing for hurt feelings that might have been sparked by the video.

For the record, the Benghazi killing of Stevens made him the sixth U.S. ambassador to be murdered and it comes tragically right in the heart of the election season.

On the road, Barack Obama never misses a chance to remind voters that he alone authorized the killing of Osama bin Laden.

The unspoken message being that al-Qaida took a massive hit with the assassination of its leader and the world will be a better place without him.

What if it turns out it was al-Qaida that sent the grenades and mortars into the U.S. compound that killed Stevens and three others?

If the entire operation was planned and executed by them under the cover of a protest against an Internet film that had been posted for a good two months before they acted, does that mean Obama has had his George W. Bush “Mission Accomplished” moment?

Obama seems confused about his role as President. His reflexive action seems always to apologize first and then seek out facts that might support his supine position later.

Even when given the chance to explain his position on world affairs he can’t, evidenced by his confusion as to whether Egypt was an ally or not during an interview last week.

Which is quite a surprise — bath or no bath — for a man who wears the dual mantles of leader of the free world and commander in chief of the most powerful nation on earth.
