Obama complaint against China raises threat of trade war

President Barack Obama has accused China of illegally subsidising its car industry, raising the spectre of a trade war as the battle for The White House enters the final straight.

The administration alleges Beijing provided $1bn (£610m) of subsidies between 2009 and 2011 by increasing tariffs on US exports of car-parts, according to a complaint filed at the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

Within hours China had hit back, using its own complaint to the WTO to challenge plans in Washington to increase tariffs on subsidised imports from China.

“We are continuing to make it clear to our trading partners that we will fight to support each jobs here at home,” Ron Kirk, America’s top trade official. said on Monday .

The attack from The White House came as Mr Obama made another campaign stop in Ohio, a must-win state and one that relies on the car industry for about 12pc of its jobs.

Mr Obama has been under increasing pressure from Republican rival Mitt Romney to get tougher on China over a series of issues, including subsidies and the protection of US intellectual property rights.

“It is too little, too late for American businesses and middle-class families,” Mr Romney said.

Throw in the only sales of Volts being to the government, and the Chinese would likely win in a fair court - if one could be found.
