Protester dies after inhaling fumes from burning American flag

Burning an American flag proved fatal for a Pakistani protester, who reportedly died from inhaling fumes from the ignited icon of independence.

Some 10,000 people rallied this week in Lahore, the capital of the Punjab province, to protest the movie trailer that Muslims say insults Islam, according to the International Herald-Tribune. One participant, identified as Abdullah Ismail, died after being taken to an area hospital. Witnesses said he had complained of feeling sick from the smoke from American flags burnt at the rally.

The rally was organized on the city's landmark mall by the Tehreek Hurmat-i-Rasool. Despite a ban on rallies on The Mall, local officials blocked off the road leading to it from noon to 6 p.m., apparently to facilitate the event.

The flag was probably made from some sort of plastic, and depending on its chemical makeup, when burned it would produce phosgene and/or other kinds of gas.

I started to wonder about the same thing, too, since this happened in Pakistan, and you'd think the rags there would be inured to things like this by now:

So a Pakistani US citizen goes to the doctor because he just simply doesn't feel good. He's tired, his stomach is upset, he has a headache. Just feels terrible. The doctor checks him over and can't find any medical reason for him to feel the way he does. He offers a Naturotherapy approach that he has seen work before. The Pakistani man is stunned, though, that the treatment means he has to go home, shit and piss into a plastic bag and leave it in his basement for a week. "Trust me," the doctor says, "I have seen this work." The man goes home and follows through on the instructions. Within a day, though his house smells terrible and by the end of the week, it is an overwhelming stench. His eyes water every time he walks in the door, but he feels no better. He calls to yell at the doctor who calmly says,"Go down and take three big deep breaths directly from the bag and you will be cured." "You're crazy!" comes the reply. "Trust me," says the doctor. Down he goes into the basement and he takes the first breath. Gagging and choking, he does it again. Then, on the third breath, he feels the headache leave. His stomach settles and he feels amazingly well. The stench is even tolerable. He calls the doctor to tell him the good news. "I told you I've seen this work with people from Pakistan before," says the doctor. "You were just homesick!"

Addendum, Excerpted from Wikipedia - Phosgene is an insidious poison as the odor may not be noticed and symptoms may be slow to appear. The odor detection threshold for phosgene is 0.4 ppm, which is four times the Threshold Limit Value. Its high toxicity arises from the action of the phosgene on the proteins in the pulmonary alveoli, which are the site of gas exchange: their damage disrupts the blood-air barrier, causing suffocation. It reacts with the amines of the proteins, causing crosslinking via formation of urea-like linkages, in accord with the reactions discussed above. Phosgene detection badges are worn by those at risk of exposure.

I am guessing the flag was made in China.

Sort of the Presidential Seal that tried its best to escape from Obama’s clutches. First, it JUMPED off the podium where Obama was speaking. Then, it surreptitiously JUMPED off the side of his car and ROLLED, ROLLED, ROLLED just as hard as a Presidential Seal can roll downhill and into the woods. Some well-intentioned security person or the other found it hiding in the woods and returned it to its imprisonment working for Obama, who superglued it on things from then on. Witness the crestfallen expression on the face of the seal. It obviously is miserable.

Oh my. Talk about instant karma.

In fact, you might say his karma ran over his dogma.

Hey, Aging in Seattle, you’re needed over here with the appropriate graphic.

Scoring with Ras’s daughter doesn’t make you immortal. It makes you envied, but it doesn’t make you immortal.

No... but having to sit through one of Ras's interminable vacation slide shows, every Thanksgiving ("Oh, look! Here's me and Bane going down the water slide together, pantsless!"), can absolutely SEEM like an eternity. ;)

Gotta head out to walk the puppy, etc., amigo. Back later. ;)
