Studies support Romney’s concern about government dependence

Mitt Romney attracted criticism Monday for videotaped comments about the high percentage of people who are dependent on government programs. But there are studies that suggest he might have a point.

Nicholas Eberstadt of the American Enterprise Institute finds that fifty years ago, government transfers totaled $24 billion in current dollars. In 2010, the number was nearly 100 times as large.

“Even after adjusting for inflation and population growth,” writes Eberstadt, “entitlement transfers to individuals have grown 727% over the past half-century.”

An index of government dependency by the Heritage Foundation reports that nearly 50 percent of the country pays no federal income tax at all — a number that has grown dramatically, from 23.7 percent in 1962 to 49.5 percent in 2009.

Gee, I wonder if Matt Lauer will talk about this tomorrow on the Today Show.

Maybe bring in some experts to illustrate where the lack of health and education has resulted in this and what can be done to combat so many folks’ inability to work.

What Romney must explain the reasons why those on fixed incomes have to go on food stamps and other “benefits” such as energy assistance etc.

Basic costs of goods, food, and energy, have been doubled or trippled driven up by Obama through edicts of regulations and prohibitions which are designed to change the systems of distribution and use of resources to conform to a socialist scheme or ideal.

Of course he has a point. And the comments about Social Security and temporarily unemployed people are a diversion. We all know what Romney meant. He meant there are a number of young and middle aged working people —not the temporarily unemployed — who get a government check, either because they don’t work or because they are being subsidized. They are the ones who will vote for Obama no matter what because their lives depend more on getting the check than a good economy. They view government assistance as a way of life. These aren’t people using true social insurance programs like Social Security and Unemployment. They are people who did not pay in or who are getting more than they paid in. They need to get off the public teat.

No one knows what he meant.

Half of FR responds to him as if he is saying “the” 47% who draw a check from the government.

Half of FR responds to him as if he is saying “the” 47% who do not owe income tax in a given year.
