Secret Service officials refused to allow protesting students at Wright State University to assemble within one-quarter mile of Vice President Joe Biden during his visit last week.

“The Secret Service respects everyone’s right to freedom of speech but we also have a duty to provide a safe and secure environment,” Secret Service spokesman Max Millien told Campus Reform, which reported that students rallying against Biden and President Obama in support of Mitt Romney moved twice at the orders of the Secret Service until they reached a designated “free speech zone.”

Yeah, they moved the free speech zone from Ohio to Nebraska. Much safer for Biden that way.

Why did they allow the SS to stop them? 1/4 mile? Who are they to determine that? Screw ‘em. Protest anyway and let a court decide.

These students are victims of the recently passed legislation called The Federal Restricted Buildings and Grounds Improvement Act of 2011. H.R. 347 was passed 388-3. Not only were our 1st Amendment rights to free speech violated, politicians were federally insulated from protesters by this bill.

Rep. Thomas J. Rooney (REPUBLICAN-Fla) sponsored H.R. 347. His communication director, Michael Mahassey, called protest reaction to the bill “a whole lot of kerfuffle over nothing. This doesn’t affect anyone’s right to protest anywhere at any time. Ever.”

My Congress Critter, Virginia Foxx (REPUBLICAN), defended the bill (in a letter to me) claiming that H.R. 347 would NOT stifle free speech and was simply an update for already existing law. (Section 1752 of title 18, United States Code, security protocol for those under Secret Service protection)

The purpose behind HR 347 was/is clear. This bill gave government officials the authority to make free speech a FELONY punishable by up to a year in prison. It is also an assault to gun rights. If charged under this law and convicted of a felony during a protest/exercise of free speech, one loses all rights to purchase or own a gun.

For 230 years “Congress shall make no law abridging free speech” has been the law. Now comes HR 347 giving federal authorities sweeping unbridled discretionary powers over our exercise of such. This bill allows Secret Service agents to decide “NO FREE SPEECH” zones rather than “FREE SPEECH “ zones.

ANY SECRET SERVICE AGENT CAN USE HIS AUTHORITY/DISCRESTION TO SUPPRESS CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS.

This law will be enforced in the same way the government enforces immigration laws. Only when they want to. They can now suppress speech BASED ON CONTENT which is expressly prohibited by the First Amendment. This law personifies the slow, creeping destruction of our basic liberties and these students will NOT be it’s only victims.

Too late to shut the door when the horse is out of the barn.
