When Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney claimed at a private fundraiser last spring that 47 percent of Americans pay no income taxes, he was mostly right.
But that 47 percent still must pay a whole slew of other taxes.
The claim that nearly half of Americans pay no income taxes is based on a 2011 finding from the Tax Policy Center, a joint tax research arm of the centrist Urban Institute and center-left Brookings Institution.
Pick a target. Isolate it. polarize it.
MSNBC was all in for the kool aid this morning. Usually you can glean something but this morning it was all kool aid all the time. You would think it was a round table of communists. The only thing missing was them calling each other “Komrade”. Comrade Minka, Comrade Scarborough, Comarde NYC reporter, ...
The bad news is that, with so few people PAYING taxes. “cutting taxes” is a policy tool that appeals to fewer and fewer folks. The tyranny of the majority stands to ensure its grip on ever larger tax revenues, paid by a numeric minority.
Robbing Peter to pay Paul will always be supported by Paul.
I hate taxes, but until we get to a fair tax or flat tax, it’s time for EVERYBODY to pay something. Once you do have skin in the game, you will all of a sudden become aware of how your tax money is being wasted.
What’s more important to Americans..
Being a slave to the government and pay no taxes or being a free person?
The government is not a business, but it acts like one imposing onerous rules and regulations. With Obama America has lost it’s direction and focus. We have an empty chair and no leadership. Obama must be a one term President.
A number of liberal groups and legislators have been sending out very misleading messages in an effort to redefine our tax burden, such as measuring taxes as a percent of income instead of a percent of the total tax collected.
Think of it, as long as you keep working and earning, taxes can keep going up just as much as your income and according to this fundamentally flawed analysis, “your tax burden hasn’t risen”. Why what’s next, New York and California as “low tax states”?
Look for the Dems to respond to this by proposing tiered bracketing of the FICA tax, also extending it to all levels of income.
That's how this country was set up. It's time to return to a darned good idea.

The answer to your question depends on which side of “The Divide” one stands...

Robbing Peter to pay Paul...the only thing you end up with is a sore Peter.
Yes, the 47% pay a lot of taxes, but they may not realize they do. So when a politician announces he is going to raise taxes on the rich, they’ll go for it every time. They don’t realize that, when you raise taxes on the rich, you pay the tax when you buy milk at the store and buy gas at the pump.
And you pay the tax in another way when your brother-in-law can’t find a job and has to move in and sleep on your couch.
You pay the tax another way when your kids get out of school and can’t find work.
Raising taxes, however you do it, only raises the cost of doing business and that always results in higher prices and reduced opportunities.
