Moreno relents, will allow Chick-fil-A
Chicago Tribune ^ | September 19, 2012 | Hal Dardick

Chicago alderman who made national headlines during the summer for opposing a Chick-fil-A in his increasingly trendy Northwest Side ward has reversed course, saying he will let the fast-food chain open a store in Logan Square.

Ald. Proco "Joe" Moreno, 1st, said the restaurant has agreed to include a statement of respect for all sexual orientations in an internal document and promised that its not-for-profit arm would not contribute money to groups that oppose gay marriage.

Though Moreno said he scored a "big win," the company made nearly identical pledges in a July 19 Facebook post that went up even before Moreno took issue with Chick-fil-A President Dan Cathy's opposition to gay marriage.

The statement of respect also falls short of Moreno's goal of adding language opposing discrimination against gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people to the company's employee handbook.

Moreno said the statement will be included in a memo called "Chick-fil-A: Who We Are" to be distributed to all corporate employees and restaurant operators. The alderman said the memo will state the company's commitment to "treat every person with honor, dignity and respect — regardless of their beliefs, race, creed, sexual orientation or gender." It also would state that it is the company's "intent ... not to engage in political or social debates."

Company officials did not respond to repeated requests to confirm Moreno's assertions about the document or the foundation's donation policies. Instead, company spokesman Jerry Johnston emailed the Tribune a copy of the statement it first posted on Facebook with very similar language to what Moreno said will be in the "Who We Are" document.

Moreno said he achieved his goal of getting Chick-fil-A to "affirm that they do not have discriminatory policies."

The Huffington Post is running this headline...”Chick-Fil-A Agrees To Cease Funding To Anti-Gay Organizations ...”

But I can't find any evidence, in the Chicago Tribune article or on the Chik-Fil-A website, that Chik-Fil-A has actually changed it's policy at all. (They did agree to some traffic flow changes for their new location.)

I found this on their website...

The Chick-fil-A culture and service tradition in our Restaurants is to treat every person with honor, dignity and respect –regardless of their belief, race, creed, sexual orientation or gender. We will continue this tradition in the over 1,600 Restaurants run by independent Owner/Operators. Going forward, our intent is to leave the policy debate over same-sex marriage to the government and political arena.

Time will tell if Chik-Fil-A will continue funding the defense of traditional marriage, but it looks like Moreno is looking to claim victory in order to back away from an obviously unconstitutional effort to deny a private business of it's first amendment rights.

CFL always supported pro-family groups which lefties call “anti-gay”. The alderman just declared victory and brought the troops home.

By adding that pledge, it looks more like CFA relented.

Talk about a biased lying headline! At least the Chi Trib headline Moreno relents, will allow Chick-fil-A is more accurate.

Poco "Joe" Moreno has also made a promise he's not telling anybody about and that is that the Chicago Chick-Fil-A won't have to pay protection to any of Joe's mob cousins, and there will be no defacing of the premises by anybody at any time ever or they're dead.

Joe forgot some of his buds like chicken sandwiches. Good for the heart!

It’s just a matter of time before the homo-agenda puts the wooden stake right into the heart of our Armed Forces...

...after all: an affirmative action policy of promoting gay officers and NCO’s must be made to address this formerly hostile organization attitudes toward Gays.

It’s bad enough the AF has already become just another social support network for the preferred voter group.

Did Chik-fil-A ever fund those organizations, or was it the owner’s personal money? I thought it was their own money, which if true, then nothing has really changed.

I agree. “We the people” turned out in millions to support Chic fil A. Now it looks like CFA will stop support of traditional marriage.

It depends whether you consider family or pro-life groups, or for that matter churches and church-sponsored charities, to be “anti-gay.”

Alderman Joe Moreno probably says yes, these are hate groups, and Chick-Fil-A says no, they are not.

In any case, I think the truth is that the Alderman is backing down, because it was a politically stupid move in the first place.

Did the company support traditional marriage with its donations, or did Dan Cathey support it personally?

I thought it was always the individual as opposed to the corporate entity.

Do you KNOW as fact that the corporation used to donate to pro-traditional family orgs., and do you KNOW as fact they are now dropping it?

Well, Brown's Chicken wasn't particularly good for the heart! Maybe Chik-Fil-A will be luckier, like Michael Corleone was luckier than Moe Green!

I certainly hope CFA hasn't changed their policy from a national perspective. Perhaps this simply refers to the what the franchise owner will do.

If it turns out CFA has bent to the "will" of the homo activities, I will be sorely disappointed in them.

and that's real the question; did they say, "CORPORATE $$$$$...
or Private $$$$"...There is a important difference.

Chic-fil-A does not use a traditional franchise model. The store is owned by corporate, the employees are employed by corporate, the franchise holder is in a profit sharinging agreement with corporate.

That is the reason the agreement was signed by the Director of Real Estate...

NONSENSE. This would mean that they could never contribute money to anyone. You could contribute today to a group that has not taken a stand against homosexuals marrying only to see them adopt that stand 3 months later.
I think this is a typical democrat lying as usual.

If it’s Dan Cathey personally donating, great! I stand corrected. But if it was the corporation and they now say they will stay out of politics, that’s different. However, I just thought of something. What if Chic Fil A doesn’t consider traditional marriage a political issue.
