For a week, the media pretended Joe the Plumber didn't exist. When he was mentioned in the debate, the spin was that it was a name like "Joe Six-pack" (not the FReeper by that name), just an "everyman". Those millions who listen to Rush Limbaugh and other talk radio show hosts had heard the clip again and again and knew exactly what was being discussed.
Then the media (and unelected Democrats working in state offices) set out to smear "Joe" for making Obama look bad.

The assertion that Barack Obama is a socialist became a hallmark of the 2008 presidential campaign. His opponent, John McCain, used Obamas own extemporaneous words to an Ohio plumber as Exhibit A: When you spread the wealth around, Obama had said, its good for everybody. That, McCain insisted, sounded a lot like socialism, as did Obamas proposals to raise taxes on the wealthy and high earners for the explicit purpose of taking better care of the lower and middle classes with that redistributed money.
