Yeah Mitt... we tired it McCain's way and it didn't work. Remember?
It's more than a quibble. There was nothing wrong in the political observation that people who do not pay federal income taxes are less likely to be moved by a plan to cut tax rates. And Romney's promotion of greater independence from government is sorely needed. But where Romney erred badly was in the implication that working Americans who fail to make enough to pay income taxes are lacking personal responsibility. That is not a political or economic judgment, but a moral judgment on responsible working people who do not deserve such a slur and if he does correct the impression he will surely lose the election.
Those who don’t pay taxes don’t want to hear about lowering taxes.
So, I think, the point is there needs to be another message that WILL resonate with them.
A message of opportunity, financial security based on a robust economy, removal of bureaucratic roadblocks and corruption, and true freedom from the chains of government (heh).
Liberals show they care by enacting policies that increase poverty. Policies that decrease poverty mean fewer people for liberals to care about.
It reminds me of this scene from The Addams Family movie:
[as they examine a rare and valuable heirloom Morticia is about to donate to charity]
Grandmama: Let's keep it!
Morticia: Hush, mama! It's for charity! Widows and orphans. We need more of them.
